We want to say this plainly before we get into the specifics. An off taste does not automatically mean your well is failing, your water is dangerous, or you need expensive treatment. Most of the time the water has a fixable chemistry issue that a properly selected treatment approach handles without any work on the well structure at all. Rotten Egg or Sulfur Smell

When the smell is in hot water and cold water is clean, check your water heater before you do anything else. The anode rod in many water heaters can react with naturally occurring sulfur in the water and make the smell much worse than it would otherwise be. When cold water smells too, the source is in the well or in the aquifer. Hydrogen sulfide forms naturally in some underground formations, particularly in areas with certain rock types and organic material. The water is usually safe to drink, but the smell is unpleasant and worth addressing. Metallic Taste
A flat, metallic taste, the kind that reminds you of pennies, points to iron, manganese, or in some cases copper leaching from household pipes.
Iron is common across much of rural Texas. It comes in two forms. Dissolved iron is clear in the glass but tastes metallic and leaves orange or rust staining on fixtures and laundry over time. Particulate iron shows up as visible reddish sediment. Manganese causes a similar metallic or bitter taste and behaves differently from iron in terms of how treatment works, which is why it is worth testing for separately. A sharp copper taste that is different from iron usually means your water is slightly acidic and leaching copper from the pipes inside your house. Earthy, Musty, or Fishy Taste
An earthy or musty taste often points to organic material. Tannins are one of the more common culprits in Texas. Bitter or Chemical Taste
Bitter is harder to pin down because it has more possible sources. Hard water with high mineral content, especially in areas with limestone geology, can give water a chalky, hard bitterness. A chemical or solvent-type taste that appeared suddenly is a different matter. That kind of taste warrants faster attention. It can come from surface contamination reaching the well, from nearby agricultural chemical application, or from a compromised casing or seal allowing something in from a shallower formation.
