Your water test results came back from the lab and the report is a page of numbers, abbreviations, and a few lines highlighted with flags or asterisks. Most rural Texas landowners have no training in reading this document, and the lab is not going to walk you through it. Here is what the most important measurements mean, what the numbers tell you, and which results require action before you use the water.

What MCL Means

Before going through specific measurements, it helps to know what MCL stands for. MCL is Maximum Contaminant Level. These are limits set by the EPA for public water systems. Private wells are not legally required to meet them, but they are the best-available benchmarks for what is safe to drink and what affects water quality in your home.

There are two types. Primary MCLs protect health. If a contaminant exceeds its primary MCL, there is a real health risk that requires action. Secondary MCLs address taste, odor, and appearance. They are not legally enforced health standards, but they matter a great deal for daily living. When a result on your report is flagged or marked with an asterisk, it usually means it exceeded a primary or secondary MCL.

pH

pH measures how acidic or alkaline your water is on a 0 to 14 scale, with 7.0 being neutral. The EPA secondary standard for drinking water is 6.5 to 8.5. Most Texas well water falls within that range.

Water below 6.5 is acidic and can leach copper from household pipes over time, causing blue-green staining in sinks and accelerating wear on plumbing fittings. Water above 8.5 is alkaline and often goes hand-in-hand with high hardness, leaving scale on fixtures and inside water heaters. Neither end is an immediate health emergency, but both accelerate plumbing problems and are worth correcting if your pH runs consistently outside the range.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

TDS measures everything dissolved in your water: minerals, salts, metals, and other compounds combined. The EPA secondary standard is 500 mg/L. Texas well water, especially in areas with hard aquifer geology, often runs higher than that.

A high TDS number does not by itself mean the water is unsafe. It tells you there is a significant amount of dissolved material in the water, and you need the rest of the report to understand what that material is. Hard water, for example, will push TDS up through calcium and magnesium, neither of which is a health hazard at normal concentrations. A TDS above 1,000 mg/L that also comes with a salty or bitter taste is worth investigating further.

Hardness

Hardness reflects the calcium and magnesium content of your water. It is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L as calcium carbonate). These are the practical ranges to know:

Below 1 gpg (17 mg/L) is soft water. Between 1 and 3.5 gpg (17 to 60 mg/L) is slightly hard. Between 3.5 and 7 gpg (60 to 120 mg/L) is moderately hard. Between 7 and 10.5 gpg (120 to 180 mg/L) is hard. Above 10.5 gpg (above 180 mg/L) is very hard.

Rural Texas well water is often in the moderately hard to very hard range. You notice it as scale on faucets, dry skin after showering, and hazy ice cubes. Hardness is not a health concern, but it shortens the life of water heaters, washing machines, and dishwashers. This number is what tells you whether you have a real case for a water softener or whether a simpler treatment handles your water. Coliform Bacteria

Coliform bacteria results should read absent. If your report shows present, that requires immediate action. Coliform presence does not always mean sewage contamination, but it does mean something entered the water supply that should not be there. You should not drink or cook with the water until a follow-up test shows it is bacteria-free.

Total coliform and E. coli are usually reported separately. E. coli specifically indicates fecal contamination and calls for faster response. The standard first step is to shock chlorinate the well, find and address the entry point, whether that is a cracked casing, a damaged wellhead cap, or flooding near the wellhead, and then retest. Nitrates

The EPA primary MCL for nitrates in drinking water is 10 mg/L as nitrogen. Nitrates above that level are a health risk, particularly for infants under six months and pregnant women. Rural Texas landowners on agricultural land face higher risk, especially near heavy fertilizer use or livestock operations. Nitrates move through sandy soil and can enter a well from nearby surface runoff faster than many landowners expect.

If your report shows nitrates above 10 mg/L, do not use that water for drinking or cooking until you address the source and treat the supply. If your nitrates are below 10 mg/L but trending upward between annual tests, watch the number closely and investigate any new agricultural activity near your well.

Iron and Manganese

These two show up together in Texas well water often enough that many landowners expect to see them. The EPA secondary MCL for iron is 0.3 mg/L. For manganese it is 0.05 mg/L. Both are secondary standards, meaning they are not legally enforced health limits for private wells, but exceeding them causes real problems in daily use.

Iron above 0.3 mg/L causes reddish-brown staining on fixtures and laundry that does not wash out. Manganese above 0.05 mg/L causes dark brown or black staining and affects the taste of coffee and tea. If either is flagged on your report, treatment is available and effective. Arsenic

The EPA primary MCL for arsenic in drinking water is 0.010 mg/L, which equals 10 micrograms per liter or 10 parts per billion. Some Texas aquifers have naturally elevated arsenic. Arsenic has no taste or smell, so there is no way to detect it without a test. If your report shows arsenic above 10 ppb, you have a health concern that requires treatment. Point-of-use reverse osmosis reliably reduces arsenic to below the MCL. Do not assume that clear, clean-tasting water is arsenic-safe.

Sulfur and Hydrogen Sulfide

If your water smells like rotten eggs, your report likely shows hydrogen sulfide or elevated sulfates. These are not usually primary health concerns at the levels found in private wells, but the odor is unmistakable and the water is unpleasant to use. What to Do With Your Results

If everything in your report falls within normal range, keep the report on file, note the date, and plan to retest at least every few years or after any significant work on the well or changes to land use nearby. A clean baseline on file also protects you if something changes later. You have a before-and-after record to compare.

If any result is flagged, the category matters. A primary MCL exceedance on nitrates, arsenic, or coliform requires action before you drink from that water. A secondary MCL exceedance on iron, hardness, or manganese is a quality issue to address on your schedule, though sooner is better for your appliances and your fixtures.
