You got your well water test results back. The numbers show iron, hardness, sulfur, or something else the report flags. Now you're looking at water treatment options, and the most common choice comes down to reverse osmosis or a whole-house filter. They sound similar. They do very different things. Choosing the wrong one costs money and leaves the problem partly unsolved.

This piece breaks down what each system does, where each one works, and how to decide which one your water actually needs. We test water across our 8-county rural Texas service area, and this question comes up in almost every water quality conversation. The answer always starts with the test, not the sale.
The Core Difference
A whole-house water filter treats every drop of water that enters the home. It removes specific contaminants, usually sediment, iron, chlorine, or other problem minerals, at the point where water enters the house. Every faucet, every appliance, every shower head gets filtered water.
Reverse osmosis treats water at a single point of use, usually under the kitchen sink. It pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure, removing a wide range of dissolved contaminants including many that whole-house filters don't touch. The filtered water comes out of a dedicated RO faucet. Your shower, your washing machine, and your garden hose do not get RO-treated water.
Neither is better in the abstract. Which one you need depends on what's in your water and what you're trying to fix.
What Whole-House Filters Do Well
A whole-house filter shines when you have a contaminant that affects the whole house, not the glass at the kitchen sink. The most common examples in rural Texas wells:
Iron. Iron stains fixtures, leaves orange marks in toilets and tubs, damages appliances, and builds up in pipes over time. A whole-house iron filter pulls the iron out before it enters the home. Running iron-contaminated water through an RO system will foul the RO membrane faster than it can be replaced.
Hydrogen sulfide (sulfur smell). If your water smells like rotten eggs, that's hydrogen sulfide gas. It affects the whole house. A whole-house treatment system, typically an air injection oxidation filter, handles it at the entry point so the problem isn't present at any fixture.
Hard water. Hard water leaves mineral scale deposits on fixtures, in water heaters, and in appliances. A water softener or whole-house scale prevention system treats it before it enters the home, protecting the water heater, dishwasher, and pipes. An RO filter at the sink will remove hardness from drinking water but won't protect your water heater or shower fixtures from scale.
Sediment and sand. If your well pulls in fine sand or sediment, a whole-house sediment filter protects appliances and the pump system. Point-of-use RO won't address sediment that's already running through your pipes and washing machine.
If the problem contaminant affects plumbing, fixtures, or appliances throughout the home, treatment needs to happen at the whole-house entry point, not a single sink.
What Reverse Osmosis Does Well
Reverse osmosis removes dissolved contaminants that most whole-house filters don't reach. These include nitrates, arsenic, certain heavy metals, and many other dissolved solids. In rural Texas, well water in some areas picks up nitrates from agricultural runoff and arsenic from naturally occurring minerals in the aquifer. These contaminants don't affect fixtures or plumbing, but they're a drinking and cooking water concern.
An RO system at the kitchen sink removes these contaminants from the water you drink and cook with. Exposure from showering is minimal for most of what RO is designed to remove. Drinking and cooking is where nitrates and arsenic matter most, and that's where RO delivers the most protection.
RO also produces noticeably better-tasting water. It removes the dissolved minerals that give groundwater its characteristic taste. If your well water tastes flat or mineral-heavy, an RO system at the sink fixes that for drinking and cooking.
The Tradeoff: Waste Water
RO systems use more water than a standard filter. For every gallon of treated water produced, the system sends several gallons of concentrate down the drain. Modern systems are more efficient than older ones, but the ratio is never one-to-one. On a well, this means the pump runs more often to replace the water that's rejected. For most rural households with a healthy well, this is not a serious concern. For a well that's already marginal on production or in drought conditions, it's worth factoring in. What If You Have Multiple Problems?
Most rural Texas wells don't have a single water quality issue. They have a combination. Iron is common. Hardness is common. Sulfur happens. And in areas with agricultural or naturally occurring contamination, nitrates or arsenic can also be present. That combination is the reason whole-house filtration and an RO system aren't always competing choices. Sometimes you need both.
A common layered setup: a whole-house iron filter and softener at the entry point, then an RO unit under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water. The whole-house system handles what affects fixtures and appliances. The RO handles the dissolved contaminants that matter for what you put in your body.
This is where the test-first rule earns its keep. Buying a treatment system without a water test is buying blind. The test tells you what's in the water. The treatment follows from that. Whole-house filtration fixes problems that affect the whole house. Reverse osmosis fixes problems that matter at the drinking and cooking point. If your water has iron, hardness, or sulfur, start with whole-house treatment. If your water has nitrates, arsenic, or high dissolved solids, add an RO system at the sink. If you have both, you may need both.
