You turn on the faucet and the water looks cloudy, milky, or hazy. It's not the orange-red tint that points to iron, and there's no sulfur smell. It looks white or murky in a way you can't place. This one trips people up because the cause can be completely harmless or something worth addressing, and the water can look the same either way.

The Glass Test: Start Here

Fill a clear glass with water straight from the tap. Set it on the counter and watch for about two minutes.

Clears from the bottom up within 60 to 90 seconds: Air bubbles. Completely harmless. You're done.

Stays cloudy, or small particles settle to the bottom: Sediment or turbidity. Worth investigating.

Stays uniformly cloudy with no change after several minutes: Could be a mineral issue, bacteria, or something else. Time to get a water test.

This one test tells you most of what you need to know. The majority of cloudy-water calls we run turn out to be the first case.

Cause 1: Air Bubbles (Harmless)

Air in the water lines is the most common cause of milky or cloudy well water, and it has nothing to do with water quality. It happens when air gets into the pressurized system, usually through the pressure tank, the pump, or the plumbing connections. When that pressurized water releases into a glass at normal air pressure, dissolved air forms tiny bubbles. That looks milky. Then the bubbles float up and the water clears.

Common reasons air gets into the system:

A waterlogged or aging pressure tank where the bladder has broken down and air mixes with the water supply

A pump drawing air along with water, which can happen if the water table drops temporarily during a dry stretch

A loose fitting or connection somewhere in the line

If the water clears in the glass and that's the end of it, you're fine. But if the cloudiness is frequent, or if you notice the pump cycling short and fast, that points to a waterlogged pressure tank worth having checked. Cause 2: Sediment or Turbidity

If the water stays cloudy after the glass test, or you can see fine particles settling to the bottom, you're looking at sediment or turbidity. This usually shows up after heavy rain or flooding, after a power outage when the pump restarts, or when something disturbs the ground around the wellhead.

What's happening: the well is pulling in fine soil, clay, or sand particles along with the water. It doesn't automatically mean the well is failing, but it tells you something changed. Either surface water found a path into the well, the well screen is worn or damaged, or there's been some disturbance to the formation around the bore.

Turbid water should be tested before you drink it. Even if the particles themselves are harmless minerals, water carrying sediment can also carry bacteria. Run the well for several minutes to flush it. If the cloudiness clears on its own, keep an eye on it. If it keeps coming back, the well needs a professional look.

Cause 3: Bacterial Contamination or Mineral Reaction

Persistent cloudiness that doesn't match the air-bubble or sediment pattern needs a lab test before you draw conclusions. Some bacterial blooms cause a milky appearance. Certain mineral reactions, like calcium or magnesium coming out of solution, can too. These are less common, but they're the ones where guessing wrong has real consequences.

If your cloudy water has an odor (earthy, musty, rotten-egg, or chemical), doesn't clear when you run the water for several minutes, changed suddenly and stays that way, or has come alongside any symptoms in the household, stop drinking it and get a water test done. A test tells you what's actually in the water. You can't tell whether bacterial contamination is present by looking at or smelling the water with any reliability, so if you're in doubt, test it first. What About Iron, Sulfur, or Other Discoloration?

Cloudy white or milky water is usually air or sediment. If your water has an orange or reddish tint, that's iron. A yellowish or brownish color that persists is often tannins or organic matter. A sulfur or rotten-egg smell is hydrogen sulfide, which is its own problem. Treatment Options

Once you know the cause, the fix matches it:

Air bubbles: If it's occasional and clears fast, no treatment needed. If it's frequent, check the pressure tank and the pump intake situation.

Sediment: A sediment filter installed at the point of entry catches particles before they reach your faucets and fixtures. The filter type depends on how much sediment your well produces and the particle size. These need periodic maintenance to stay effective.

Bacteria or contamination: Shock chlorination of the well to disinfect it, followed by retesting. If contamination is recurring, that points to a structural issue with the well or the wellhead seal that needs a repair.
