That rotten egg smell coming out of the faucet stops you cold. If you have a water well and started smelling sulfur when you run the water, you are not alone. It is one of the more common calls we get from rural Texas landowners who have moved onto their land and found the water has a bite to it. The smell is almost always fixable. What changes the fix is knowing the source, and that starts with testing, not guessing.

Most well companies hear the words sulfur smell and recommend a whole-home treatment system before they have confirmed what they are treating. What creates the sulfur smell

The compound responsible is hydrogen sulfide gas. It registers on the human nose at concentrations far below what would be a health concern at the levels found in most residential wells. That is worth knowing upfront. The smell is worth addressing, but it is not a medical emergency while you figure out the source. There are three common causes, and each points to a different fix.

Hydrogen sulfide in the aquifer

Some aquifer zones in Texas carry naturally dissolved hydrogen sulfide. It is a geologic condition, not a sign of contamination, and the well is pulling it up along with the water. When this is the source, both the hot and cold water smell, you notice it as soon as you run any tap, and it has been there since the well was first used. Shock chlorination will not solve it because no bacteria are involved. The fix is treatment at the point where water enters the house, an air injection system or an oxidizing filter that strips the gas before it reaches your pipes.

Sulfur-reducing bacteria in the well

Sulfur-reducing bacteria can colonize the well casing, the pump intake, or the surrounding formation. These bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct of their activity. The smell tends to appear on both hot and cold water but is often strongest after the well sits unused for several hours, like first thing in the morning when no water has moved. Shock chlorination done properly is the first-line response. If the bacteria have been established long enough, a more thorough well rehabilitation may be needed to clear them out.

Bacteria in the water heater

This is the most common source of sulfur smell that shows up on the hot side only. Most water heaters contain a magnesium anode rod designed to protect the tank from corrosion. Sulfur-reducing bacteria thrive in the warm, low-oxygen environment inside a heater and react with that anode rod to produce hydrogen sulfide. If your cold water is clean and only the hot side smells, the water heater is almost certainly the cause. Replacing the magnesium anode with an aluminum or zinc-alloy rod resolves this for most households. It is one of the cheaper fixes in water treatment, and it often gets skipped because companies go straight to whole-home systems without testing the source first.

The one check to run before you call anyone

Run the cold water at a faucet away from the water heater for about a minute. Smell it. Then run the hot side and compare. If the smell is strong on the hot side and faint or absent on the cold, start with the water heater. If both sides smell equally, the source is in the well or the aquifer. That one check narrows the diagnosis before you spend anything.

Treatment matched to the source

Once you have identified the source, the fix follows.

Hot side only: water heater fix

Replace the anode rod with a zinc-alloy or aluminum version. Some service providers also do a temperature raise and flush cycle to address bacteria in the tank before the new rod goes in. Done correctly, it resolves the smell on the hot side in most cases. If the smell returns within a few weeks, the heater may need a full drain-and-disinfection before the new anode takes hold.

Shock chlorination is the first response. The process introduces a concentrated chlorine solution into the well, lets it contact the casing, pump, and surrounding formation, then flushes it out completely before the water is tested again. Done carefully, it knocks back the bacteria effectively. If the smell keeps returning, the well may need a more thorough rehabilitation that addresses how bacteria are re-entering the system.

Both sides, no bacteria: geologic source

When testing shows no bacteria and the smell is geologic, in-line treatment at the point of entry is the path forward. An air injection system introduces air into the water to oxidize the hydrogen sulfide, which is then filtered out before it reaches the house. Activated carbon filtration handles lower concentrations. Manganese greensand filters capture hydrogen sulfide along with iron and manganese. Which system fits depends on the concentration, whether other minerals are present, and your household water demand. Is hydrogen sulfide in well water dangerous?

At the concentrations found in most Texas residential wells, hydrogen sulfide is an odor and aesthetic issue rather than a health threat. The human nose detects it at levels far below what is considered unsafe for drinking or bathing. The EPA secondary standard for hydrogen sulfide addresses odor, not toxicity. That said, the smell can mask other quality changes worth knowing about, which is another reason testing comes first rather than treating blind.

Hydrogen sulfide is mildly corrosive to certain metals and can accelerate wear on fixtures, water heaters, and some plumbing fittings over time. The smell is the visible symptom. Corrosion is the quieter long-term cost of leaving it alone.

When the smell comes on suddenly

A well that smelled clean for years and then developed a sulfur smell is worth investigating promptly. A new smell is a signal that something changed, whether a shift in the water table, surface water intrusion after heavy rain, or bacteria that have finally reached a critical mass. Whatever the trigger, sudden quality changes are worth testing as soon as you notice them, not next month.
