You turn on the tap and something is off. Maybe the water tastes like a handful of pennies. Maybe there is an orange ring in the toilet tank that comes back two days after you scrub it. Maybe the smell hits you before the water does. Out here on well water, iron is one of the most common problems we get called about, and most folks lump it all together. But there are really two different troublemakers, and they do not get fixed the same way. One is dissolved iron in the rock and soil your well draws from. The other is a living thing. Telling them apart matters, because the wrong fix wastes your money and leaves the real problem in the ground.

Here is where we start, and where we wish more companies started. Most well companies will sell you a whole new treatment system the minute you mention rusty water. Dissolved iron: the staining kind

Dissolved iron is iron that the water picked up underground and is carrying along invisibly. Straight from the tap, the water often looks clear. Then it sits, hits air, and the iron turns to rust right in front of you. That is why the stains show up in the bottom of the toilet tank, on the sides of the tub, and on anything the water touches and dries on.

Signs you are dealing with dissolved iron:

  • Orange, brown, or reddish stains on sinks, tubs, toilets, and laundry
  • A metallic taste, like the penny taste
  • Water that looks clear when poured but turns cloudy or rusty after it sits
  • Coffee and tea that taste flat or off
  • Stains on white clothes that bleach will not lift and can actually make worse

Dissolved iron is a nuisance more than a danger at the levels we usually see across our service area, but it wears on your home. It eats at fixtures, dulls laundry, and builds up inside your water heater and pipes over the years. It is a problem worth solving, and one with a clean, mechanical answer once you know how much iron is in the water and what is riding along with it.

Iron bacteria: the slimy, smelly kind

Iron bacteria are alive. They feed on the iron in your water and leave behind a slimy mess as they grow. This is a different animal, and it usually announces itself with your nose and your hands before your eyes.

Signs you are dealing with iron bacteria:

  • A slimy, gel-like film inside the toilet tank, in the well, or in pipes, often reddish-brown or rust-colored
  • A rotten, swampy, or sometimes oily or sewage-like smell
  • Fixtures, aerators, and screens that clog up faster than they should
  • Water that may come out tinted or with little flecks or strings of buildup
  • A film or sheen on standing water that looks a little like an oil slick

That slime is the giveaway. Dissolved iron stains a hard surface. Iron bacteria coat it in something you can wipe off and feel. The smell is the other big tell. A strong rotten-egg or swampy odor points toward bacteria and the gases they and their neighbors give off, not toward plain dissolved iron.

How to tell which one you have

You can do some honest detective work at the kitchen table before anybody comes out. Pour a clear glass of water and let it sit for an hour. Dissolved iron tends to start clear and turn rusty as it settles. Then check the toilet tank, the part most people never look inside. Hard orange stains on the porcelain lean toward dissolved iron. A slimy, smearable coating leans toward iron bacteria. Give it a good sniff, too. A metallic note is more iron. A rotten, swampy stink is more bacteria.

The catch is that plenty of wells have both at once, and your senses can only take you so far. They tell you something is wrong. They do not tell you how much iron, what kind, and what else is in the water alongside it, like manganese or sulfur or hardness that changes the whole picture. That is why we do not guess and we do not sell off a hunch. A real water test puts numbers on the problem so the fix matches what is actually in your well. Why the water test comes first

We say it on every job. If the water is not right, nothing else on the land works. And you cannot make it right until you know what you are working with. Two homes a mile apart can pull from different water, so what fixed your neighbor's rusty water may do nothing for yours. A test tells us the type of iron, the amount, the pH, and what is riding along with it. From there the treatment path almost picks itself.

The treatment paths

For dissolved iron

Lower amounts of dissolved iron can sometimes ride along with a water softener, which pulls the iron out the same way it pulls out hardness. Higher amounts usually call for a dedicated iron filter that oxidizes the iron and traps it before it ever reaches your tap. For iron bacteria

Iron bacteria do not get filtered away like dissolved iron, because the problem is living and growing. The path here usually starts with shock chlorination to knock the bacteria back in the well and the plumbing. From there it is about keeping them from coming back, which can mean ongoing disinfection and good well maintenance. It takes follow-through, and a one-and-done blast often is not enough on its own. We would rather come back and confirm it held than walk away and hope.

What we would tell a neighbor

Rusty water and slimy water look like the same headache from across the room. They are not. Dissolved iron stains, tastes metallic, and gets filtered out. Iron bacteria leave slime and a bad smell and have to be knocked back and kept down. Get those mixed up and you will spend money on the wrong machine. So before you let anyone sell you a system, get the water tested and find out what you are actually fighting.
