What pH Means in Plain Terms

pH measures how acidic or alkaline water is, on a scale of 0 to 14. Seven is neutral. Below 7 is acidic. Above 7 is alkaline. For drinking water, the EPA sets a secondary guideline range of 6.5 to 8.5. The lower the pH, the faster that corrosion happens.

Acidic water does not make your water unsafe to drink in the same way that bacteria or nitrates would. The concern is secondary: acidic water corrodes pipes, and that corrosion can dissolve copper and other metals into your water over time. So it starts as a plumbing problem and can become a water quality problem if it goes unaddressed for years.

Signs Your Well Water Might Be Acidic

These are the tells we look for when a customer calls and says something seems off:

Blue or green staining around drains and fixtures. Turquoise or teal staining in the toilet bowl, around sink drains, or on white sinks means copper is dissolving out of your pipes and depositing wherever the water settles. Pinhole leaks in copper pipes. Acidic water slowly eats through copper from the inside. The leaks start small and grow. If you have had multiple pinhole leaks over a few years, test the pH before spending money on pipe replacement. You may be fixing symptoms rather than the cause.

Metallic or sour taste. Copper dissolving into your water can leave a metallic edge. Not everyone notices it, but some people do, especially those with sensitive palates.

Appliances wearing out ahead of schedule. Water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines that fail before they should can sometimes trace back to water chemistry. Acidic water corrodes metal tanks and heating elements over time.

What Causes Low pH in Texas Well Water

A few different things pull pH down in groundwater:

Carbon dioxide dissolved in the groundwater. Rainwater picks up CO2 as it passes through soil. That CO2 forms carbonic acid, which lowers pH. This is common and entirely natural. It shows up in plenty of wells across our 8-county footprint, sometimes more noticeably after wet seasons when a lot of surface water has moved through the ground.

Organic matter in shallow soils. Water passing through soils rich in organic material picks up natural organic acids on the way down. Shallower wells see this more often than deep ones.

Local geology. Some aquifer formations produce naturally acidic water based on the mineral composition of the rock the water passes through. Depth, formation type, and the path the water travels all shape the chemistry you get at your tap.

None of these are alarming on their own. Low pH is a water chemistry condition with known treatment solutions. The first step is finding out your actual number.

How to Test for pH

You have options. Home test strips give a ballpark reading and are fine for monitoring water you already know. They are not precise enough to make treatment decisions from. A certified lab test gives you an exact number, and it also tells you what else is in your water, which matters when you are designing a treatment plan.

We do not recommend buying a treatment system before you know your pH and what else is in the water. Treatment gets specified to the actual chemistry. A filter that does not match your problem is money spent on the wrong thing.

Fixing Acidic Well Water: Two Main Options

The right approach depends on how low your pH is and what else the water test shows.

Calcite filter (neutralizing filter). Calcite is a calcium carbonate media. Water passes through it, picks up small amounts of calcium carbonate, and the pH rises naturally. No chemicals. No electricity. It works well for water in the mildly acidic range. The tradeoff is a slight increase in water hardness, which sometimes calls for a water softener alongside it. The calcite media dissolves slowly and needs periodic refilling. For many rural Texas wells with mild acidity, a calcite neutralizing filter is the right fit.

Chemical injection system. For more severely acidic water, a metering pump injects soda ash or sodium bicarbonate into the water stream before it reaches the pressure tank. This handles higher flow rates and more extreme pH levels than a passive filter can manage. It requires a chemical tank, a metering pump, and occasional replenishment, but it reliably manages tougher conditions.

Once you correct the pH, corrosion slows or stops. Your pipes stop losing material to the water. Your fixtures stop staining. What About Pipes That Already Corroded?

Treating the water stops ongoing corrosion. It does not repair holes that are already there. The good news is you are not replacing your whole plumbing system at once. You are replacing the sections that need it, now that the root cause is addressed. New pipe in a house with corrected water chemistry holds up.
