What Maintenance Buys You Without Treating the Water
If you are not ready to address the water itself yet, two things can slow the damage. First, flush the water heater tank once a year. Connect a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and run water out through it until it runs clear. Flushing removes loose sediment before it bakes onto the bottom and becomes hard scale. Second, set the thermostat on the water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit rather than higher. Scale precipitation is driven by heat. Lower temperatures slow the rate at which minerals drop out of the water and build up in the tank. You still get hot water. The scale forms slower.
