Texas summers are hard on wells. If your pressure has been steady for months and starts dropping in July, or the water runs gritty for a second before clearing, or the pump clicks on more often than it used to, you are not imagining it. Something changed. The most common cause is not a failed pump. It is a dry Texas summer doing what dry Texas summers do to underground water.

What is happening underground in a dry summer
Your well pulls water from an aquifer. That is a layer of saturated rock or sand underground that holds water the way a sponge holds liquid. In a wet spring, the aquifer stays full. In a long, dry summer with no rain recharging it, the water table drops. Pastures, trees, livestock, and neighboring wells are all drawing from the same reserve.
A well drilled to a good depth in normal conditions can still slow down when the water table drops below the intake screen. The pump is not broken. The well is not collapsing. The water is not where it was in April. This is a recovery rate problem. The well needs more time to refill between draws, and in a dry summer, that time stretches out. How to tell if it is the weather or a mechanical problem
A drought-affected well usually shows up as reduced flow at the faucet, a brief spurt of air in the water, pressure that comes back after an hour or two of light use, or water that runs a little sandy. The system is still working. It is taxed.
A mechanical problem shows up differently. A pump failure is a sudden drop to zero pressure. A pressure tank problem cycles the pump constantly and produces pressure that bounces up and down. A tripped breaker or a blown fuse means no water from the start, not reduced water.
How do you tell them apart? Check the pressure gauge on the pressure tank. A normal system runs between 40 and 60 PSI. Listen for whether the pump is running at all. Notice when the problem happens. If water comes back after a few hours of low use, you are watching the well recover, not fail. If the pump runs nonstop and pressure swings, the pressure tank is the suspect. If you have no water at all and the pump is silent, work the no-water checklist and check the breaker first. A pump that cycles too hard in summer heat can trip a breaker. That is a five-minute fix if it holds on the first reset.
What to check before you call anyone
First: check the breaker. If the pump circuit tripped, reset it once. If it trips again right away, leave it alone. Repeated trips mean the pump is drawing too much current or there is a wiring issue.
Second: check the pressure gauge on the pressure tank. Zero pressure with the pump not running means a power or pump issue. Normal pressure but no flow at a faucet means the problem is somewhere downstream of the tank.
Third: reduce demand and wait. Fill a glass, cut back on water use for two or three hours, and check again. If pressure returns, the well is recovering. That is useful information.
Fourth: look at the wellhead. Is there standing water around the casing? Did anything disturb the area recently? These observations help us figure out what to look at when we arrive.
One thing to skip: do not keep running the pump when output has dropped. Running a submersible pump without water overheats it fast and can burn it out. Give the well rest when it is struggling.
What we do when you call about low summer output
When you call us about low pressure or dropping output in a dry month, we come and test. We check pump output, measure pressure, and look for sediment in the water. Sediment shows up when the pump is drawing close to the bottom of the water column, which tells us how close the intake screen is to running dry.
We tell you what we found in plain terms. If the water table is down and the well is recovering on its own schedule, we say so and talk through how to manage demand through the dry stretch. If the pump is showing signs of wear or the pressure tank needs attention, we test before we quote a replacement. If the well genuinely cannot keep up with the household, a storage tank on a low-yield well often solves it for far less than a new hole. Habits that protect your well when rains are short
Spread out heavy water use. Running the dishwasher, doing laundry, and filling a stock tank back to back puts maximum demand on a well when it has minimum reserve. Spacing those tasks through the day gives the aquifer time to refill between draws.
Fix leaks before summer. A running toilet or dripping faucet keeps the pump cycling constantly, drawing down a well that needs rest. A slow drip sounds minor. Over twenty-four hours it adds up to real water volume.
Know your well's recovery rate. When we drill or service a well, we document how fast it refills after a draw. That number is your guide for dry months, and you have it in writing when you need it.
If you are buying land during a drought stretch and the property has a well, summer is the right time to test it. You are seeing worst-case output, which is important information before you sign anything.
