The staining that will not scrub off. Dark brown or black rings around the toilet bowl, dark spots on the sink, laundry that comes out of the wash looking dirtier than it went in. Most rural Texas homeowners know about iron in well water because it leaves rust-colored stains. Manganese does the same thing, but darker. It is less talked about, which is why a lot of people spend money on treatment for the wrong mineral.
At J4 Water Works we deal with manganese regularly across our eight-county footprint. Here is what it is, how to know if you have it, and what actually fixes it.
What manganese is and where it comes from
Manganese is a naturally occurring mineral found in rock and soil. When groundwater moves through certain rock formations, it picks up manganese on the way. This happens underground, before it ever reaches your well. It is not a sign of contamination from your surface or your neighbors. It is geology.
It is more common in wells that draw from deep, low-oxygen aquifers. The same conditions that concentrate iron tend to concentrate manganese, and it is not unusual to see both in the same water supply. In some parts of rural Texas, manganese levels are higher because of the specific rock the water moves through on its way to the aquifer.
How to recognize it
Iron stains orange-brown. Manganese stains black or dark purple-brown. That is the easiest way to tell them apart at a glance.
Look for:
- Dark or black staining on toilet bowls, sinks, and shower walls
- A metallic or bitter taste in drinking water
- Black or dark sediment in toilet tanks
- Laundry coming out with dark spots or a grayish cast
- Dark buildup in pipes or on faucet screens over time
You can have manganese without any taste or odor at all. The staining is often the first sign. Some homeowners assume it is mold, or the toilet manufacturer's coating wearing off. When the problem keeps coming back no matter how much you scrub, the water is the place to look. Health considerations
The EPA has a secondary standard for manganese based on taste, odor, and staining. There is also an EPA health advisory for manganese in drinking water, particularly for infants and children, where long-term exposure at elevated levels has been studied. The general guidance is that low levels typical in many wells pose no immediate health risk, but elevated levels in drinking water are worth addressing, especially if children are in the household.
If you do not know your manganese level, you do not know which side of that line you are on. Testing is the only way to find out.
Manganese versus iron: two different problems
Iron and manganese are related problems, but they are not the same, and the treatment that handles one does not always handle the other. Most iron filters do reduce manganese to some degree, but not consistently enough to bring high manganese levels into acceptable range.
A few things that help tell them apart before you test: orange or rust-colored staining points to iron; black or dark brown staining points to manganese. Slime or buildup in the toilet tank with an orange or dark tint could be iron bacteria, which is a different problem again. We cover that in our piece on iron and iron bacteria in well water.
Your well water can have iron, manganese, or both. A full water quality test identifies all three so you are treating what is actually there.
Testing for manganese
The only way to know your manganese level is to test the water. A full panel from a certified lab covers iron, manganese, and other common minerals in addition to bacterial safety testing. That is the baseline we recommend for any rural Texas well, at installation and periodically afterward.

We test before we treat. There is no point installing a manganese filter on a well that does not have a manganese problem. We run the numbers, show you the results, and recommend treatment only when the test shows it is needed.
How manganese is treated
The right approach depends on your level and whether you have iron alongside it.
Greensand filters are a common choice for manganese. They use a treated media that oxidizes manganese and iron, then filters the particles out. They work well when manganese is the primary issue or when both are present at moderate levels.
Oxidizing filters with an air injection system push dissolved oxygen into the water ahead of the filter, which forces the manganese to form particles that the filter can then capture. These systems handle higher manganese levels more consistently.
Water softeners do remove some manganese at low levels, but they are not designed for it and they are not the right primary fix. Our piece on well water treatment options walks through the broader landscape if you want to compare approaches.

We have seen rural Texas homeowners spend money on softeners, descalers, and tank flushes, all because they assumed the staining was a fixture or a plumbing issue. When the staining keeps coming back, the water is the source.
