The short answer is yes, it can happen. But whether it has on your property is something a water test answers, not a guess. We test before we assume anything, and that habit has saved a lot of property owners from expensive fixes for problems they did not have.

Here is what you need to understand about how contamination travels, what Texas law requires on setback distance, what to look for, and what to do when your water test comes back with something that warrants attention.

How Contamination from a Septic System Reaches a Well

A conventional septic system works by holding wastewater in a tank until the solids settle and the liquid clarifies enough to release into a drain field. The drain field is a series of perforated pipes or chambers buried in the soil. The soil does the final treatment, filtering bacteria and nutrients before the water reaches groundwater.

An aerobic system adds oxygen injection and a chlorination step, which treats the wastewater more thoroughly before it leaves the system. Both types rely on soil and distance doing their part.

When a system fails because the tank is overloaded, the drain field is saturated, pipes are cracked, or maintenance has slipped, partially treated wastewater moves through the soil faster than it should. In the right conditions, that material can reach the water table and travel horizontally in the direction the groundwater flows.

Whether it reaches your well depends on soil permeability, depth to the water table, the direction groundwater moves on your land, and the total distance between the drain field and your well casing. Heavy clay slows travel significantly. Sandy or gravelly soil lets water move faster. There is no rule that applies universally without knowing your specific land.

What Texas Law Says About Setback Distance

Texas law sets minimum required distances between water wells and on-site sewage facilities. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulates septic systems through its on-site sewage facility program. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation governs well drilling and placement. Both agencies require licensed contractors to meet the setback requirements before a new system gets installed.

The critical point for your situation is that those distances are measured from your well to the nearest edge of a drain field, regardless of which side of the property line each one sits on. A neighbor's drain field that ends 40 feet from their property line, with your well sitting 20 feet on your side, means 60 feet of total clearance between the two. That number is what matters, not the property line itself.

Older systems installed before current regulations may not meet today's standards. Rural Texas has a lot of septic systems put in the ground decades ago when the rules were different or less enforced. An older system closer to your well than current law would allow is a real situation worth understanding.

Aerobic vs. Conventional: Does the Type of Septic Change the Risk?

Aerobic septic systems are common in rural Texas, especially in areas where the soil is not suited to conventional drain fields. They treat wastewater more thoroughly than conventional systems because they add oxygen injection and chlorination before releasing effluent. A properly functioning aerobic system discharges cleaner water than a conventional one does.

But a poorly maintained or failing aerobic system is a different story. If the aerator is broken, the chlorine tablets have run out, or the spray heads are misfiring, the extra treatment advantage disappears. We see aerobic systems that have not had their maintenance contract honored in years, and they are no safer to neighboring wells than an overloaded conventional drain field. TCEQ says homeowners may perform maintenance on certain aerobic systems two years after initial installation, but local permitting authorities can require training or continued licensed maintenance. Check the permit and local authority before assuming the schedule.

The Two Indicators That Signal a Problem

When contamination from a septic system reaches well water, it typically shows up in two ways: coliform bacteria and elevated nitrates. Both require a lab test to confirm. You cannot see or taste either one reliably enough to act on without the numbers.

Coliform bacteria. Coliform in a well water test means fecal material has entered the water supply from somewhere. A failing nearby septic is one possible source. So is a cracked or deteriorating well casing, surface water intrusion after a flood or heavy rain, an improperly sealed wellhead cap, or a number of other causes. A coliform-positive result does not automatically point to your neighbor's drain field. It points to a problem that needs a source investigation. Nitrates. Nitrates come from two primary sources in rural Texas: septic systems and agricultural fertilizer. High nitrate levels in well water are a health concern, particularly for infants and pregnant women. The EPA's maximum contaminant level for nitrates in drinking water is 10 milligrams per liter. Signs to Watch For Before the Test

Testing gives you the numbers. Some signs are worth noticing while you wait for results.

A sewage-like odor in your water when there was none before is the most obvious red flag. A sudden change in taste after years of consistent flavor is another. Cloudy or milky water appearing after a period of normal clear output is worth a call. These changes can come from your own system, not a neighbor's. A cracked casing, a failing pressure tank, or a pump drawing from a different depth can all change what your water looks and smells like. The point is not to assume a source. Any sudden change in water quality warrants investigation.

If you are on a well in a part of rural Texas where septic systems are dense or older, or where a known failing system sits nearby, increasing your testing to every six months rather than annually is worth the added cost. The information is worth having.
