What Tannins Are

Tannins are organic compounds that form when plant material breaks down in soil and groundwater. Leaves, peat, wood, and organic matter decompose and release humic and fulvic acids into the water. Those acids give the water a yellow, amber, or brown color, similar to tea or diluted coffee.

In the Gulf Coast and coastal plains regions of Texas, soils tend to be rich in organic material. When groundwater passes through those organic layers on its way to the aquifer, it can pick up tannins and carry them into your well. The color is not a sign the system is failing. It's a sign of what's in the ground your well is drawing from.

Is Tannin Water Safe to Drink?

At typical concentrations found in private well water, tannins are not considered a health risk. They do not carry the contamination concerns that coliform bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, or heavy metals do. That said, tannin water creates real problems in everyday use

  • It stains laundry, sinks, toilets, and appliances a yellow-brown color over time.
  • It can taste earthy or slightly bitter, similar to weak tea.

At higher concentrations, tannins can interfere with treatment systems designed for hardness or iron, making those systems less effective.

How to Tell Tannins Apart From Iron and Other Problems

Yellow or brown well water has several possible causes, and treating the wrong one wastes money. Here is how the main culprits behave:

Tannins produce consistently colored water throughout the glass. The color is uniform with no particles or sediment. There is no metallic smell. If you let a glass sit, the color stays evenly distributed rather than settling. The taste is earthy at most.

Iron often produces reddish-brown or orange-tinted water with a metallic smell. Iron staining on fixtures is orange or rust colored. If you let a glass of high-iron water sit, reddish particles often settle at the bottom.

Treatment Options That Actually Work

Not all water treatment handles tannins well. Here is what does:

Anion exchange resins are the most effective treatment for tannins. An anion exchange resin works differently from a standard water softener. Standard softeners target hardness minerals through cation exchange and do not remove tannins. Anion exchange specifically targets the negatively charged tannin molecules and removes them from the water. These systems need periodic regeneration and proper sizing for your household's water use.

Activated carbon filtration reduces tannin levels and improves taste and odor. Carbon filtration works well as part of a multi-stage system paired with an anion resin, especially when tannin levels are significant. Carbon media has a finite capacity and needs periodic replacement.

Reverse osmosis at the point of use, typically under the kitchen sink, removes tannins from drinking and cooking water. It doesn't treat the whole house but handles what you consume directly. RO systems generate some wastewater and need periodic membrane replacement.

What Tannins Tell You About Your Aquifer

If your well has tannins, it tells you something about the aquifer you're drawing from. Shallow aquifer wells in organic-rich coastal soils tend to have higher tannin concentrations than deeper wells drawing from formations with less organic material. In some areas of our 8-county Gulf Coast footprint, the shallower water-bearing formations pass through layers with significant organic content, while deeper formations produce cleaner water with fewer treatment challenges.

This doesn't mean you need a new well if you have tannins. It means the treatment system needs to account for what your specific water contains. When planning a new well on land where the neighbors have tannin problems, going deeper may produce water with a better starting chemistry. What Most Companies Get Wrong on Tannin Treatment

Most well and septic companies sell a whole new system when something stops working. The same tendency shows up in water treatment: recommend the most expensive system and figure out later whether it was necessary.

We test the water first. That matters for tannins specifically because tannin levels vary widely from property to property, and the treatment you need depends on the actual concentration and what else the test shows. A light tannin issue might be managed with a well-sized carbon filter. A more significant one may need a dedicated anion exchange system. We do not spec the expensive system if the water doesn't call for it.

When Tannins Are a New Problem

If your well water recently turned yellow or brown and it wasn't that color before, tannins are one possibility. Others include surface water entering the well after heavy rain or flooding, a casing seal that has degraded over time, or a shift in the water table drawing from a different layer. A sudden color change in water that was previously clear is worth investigating, not waiting out.
