The water coming out of your faucet should be clear. When it's not, when there's grit on the bottom of the glass, or sand building up in the aerator screens, or a brownish tinge that shows up after the pump runs, something in the system is out of order. The good news is that sediment in well water has a short list of causes, and most of them have a straightforward fix once you know which one you're dealing with.

We run into sediment calls fairly often. Most of the time the cause is mechanical, not geological. It's not that your land has bad water. It's that something in the pump or the well screen isn't working the way it should. That distinction matters because the fix is different depending on the cause. We diagnose before we replace, so we're not going to tell you the well needs re-drilling because there's sand in the glass. We're going to find out where the sand is actually coming from.

The Most Common Causes

Sand or grit in the water usually comes from one of a few sources.

Pump Screen Failure or Wear

Submersible pumps sit at depth in the well where the water-bearing layer fills them. Most pumps have an intake screen that keeps coarse material out while water flows in. Over time, that screen can wear, crack, or corrode, letting fine sand and sediment get pulled through the pump and up the line. When this is the cause, you'll often see grit that increases during periods of heavy use and drops off when the pump runs less.

Pump Set Too Close to the Bottom

If the pump is set too close to the bottom of the well, it picks up the sediment that settles there. Sand and silt accumulate at the bottom of any well over time. A pump set too low stirs that material up every time it runs. The fix is adjusting the pump to a higher position in the well, which keeps the intake away from settled sediment without affecting how much water the well produces.

New Well or Recently Worked On

A brand-new well will often produce some sediment in the first days of use. Drilling stirs up fine particles in the water-bearing layer, and the well needs to be developed, flushed, and allowed to settle before it runs consistently clear. If you're seeing sediment right after a new well or after pump work, give it a few days of flushing and check again. If it doesn't clear up, call us. That's not normal past the first day or two.

Deteriorating Casing or Well Screen

Older steel casings can corrode from the inside, shedding rust and scale that shows up as brown or orange particles in the water. An older well screen, the perforated section at the bottom of the casing that lets water in, can break down over time and allow fine material through that it used to keep out. This type of sediment tends to be reddish or brownish and may come and go depending on how hard the pump runs.

Rust or scale from the casing is different from iron dissolved in the water itself. If you're also seeing orange staining on fixtures or laundry, that points more toward dissolved iron than physical rust particles. Those have different sources and different fixes. Geological Shifts

Less common, but it happens. A significant drought can cause the water table to drop, which can disturb the sediment layers around the well. A heavy pumping season where the well produces more water than the aquifer recharges can pull fine material in around the screen. These situations are worth a professional look because they can affect more than the sediment level.

How to Start Diagnosing It

Look at the sediment itself. Sand and grit are granular and settle to the bottom of a glass quickly. Rust or scale particles are reddish or orange and may partially dissolve or stain the glass. Cloudy water that doesn't settle is a different problem from visible particles, and that one may call for a water test rather than a mechanical inspection.

Note when it happens. Sediment right after the pump kicks on, especially after the system has been sitting idle, can indicate settled material being stirred up from the bottom of the well. Sediment that runs consistently regardless of pump cycling points more toward a screen or casing issue.

Check the aerator screens on your faucets and the inlet screens on your washing machine. Fine sediment accumulates there and can restrict flow even when the water looks clear coming out of the tap. Cleaning those screens is a quick first step that sometimes resolves the visible problem before you've traced the root cause.

Whole-House Sediment Filters

A sediment filter installed on the main water line, before the water reaches your fixtures, captures particles before they reach the tap. These are canister filters with replaceable cartridges. They don't fix the source of the sediment, but they protect your appliances, your hot water heater, and your fixtures while you're diagnosing or working on the underlying problem.

For a new well that's still settling, a temporary sediment filter buys time without forcing an immediate repair decision. For an older well where the screen is wearing, a whole-house filter extends the life of the system while you decide what to do about the screen.

Filters have to be maintained. A sediment filter that hasn't been changed in months becomes a restriction in the line and a place where bacteria can grow. When to Call Us

If the sediment started suddenly and hasn't cleared after a day or two of flushing, that's a reason to call. Gradual sediment that's been getting worse over time is also worth a visit. Both patterns point toward something in the well or the pump that needs attention before it turns into a bigger repair.

Any sudden change in water quality, whether it's sediment, odor, taste, or color, means something changed in the well or the pump. That change could be mechanical, geological, or surface water getting in. Until you know which one, you're guessing. We don't recommend well re-drilling when a pump adjustment or screen repair handles it. That's the whole point of diagnosing before quoting.
