What PFAS Are
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are a large group of man-made chemicals that have been used in manufacturing and consumer products since the 1940s. You have likely encountered them in non-stick cookware coatings, water-resistant clothing, stain-resistant fabrics, food packaging, and firefighting foam. They are called forever chemicals because they break down extremely slowly in the environment and in the human body. Once they enter the soil or groundwater, they persist.
Federal health and environmental agencies have been studying PFAS for decades. EPA finalized federal PFAS limits for public water systems in 2024. As of May 2026, EPA is proposing to keep the PFOA and PFOS limits while reconsidering other PFAS provisions; private wells still require owner-arranged testing. How PFAS Can Reach Groundwater
PFAS enter the environment from industrial manufacturing, the use of firefighting foam at airports and military sites, and the disposal of consumer products. From those sources, these compounds move through soil and can eventually reach the water table.
Not every rural Texas well has elevated PFAS. Many don't. Why Private Well Owners Are on Their Own
Here is the part that surprises a lot of rural families. When a city water system has a PFAS problem, it must report it and fix it under the new federal rules. When a private well has a PFAS problem, there is no automatic notification. No test result in the mail. No requirement to treat. The well is private property, and the owner manages it.
This is consistent with how well ownership works for everything else. You manage your own water quality, hire your own service provider, and make your own decisions about treatment. For bacteria, for hardness, for iron, and now for PFAS. We think about it the same way we think about every other water quality issue: test the water first, find out what is actually there, then decide what to do. How to Test for PFAS
Standard well water tests don't cover PFAS. A basic bacterial test, a hardness panel, or an iron analysis won't tell you anything about PFAS concentrations. PFAS testing requires a separate analysis at a state-certified laboratory.
The process is straightforward. Contact a TCEQ-certified water testing laboratory. They will send you a sampling kit with collection containers and instructions. You collect a water sample from your tap, before the water passes through any filters or softeners, and ship it back to the lab. Results typically come back in one to two weeks, depending on the lab and the specific panel you ordered.
PFAS test panels vary in scope. Some labs test for a handful of the most commonly detected compounds, including PFOA and PFOS. Others offer broader panels covering dozens of related compounds. If your land sits near a known contamination source, an expanded panel is worth the additional cost. For a general baseline check, a standard panel is a reasonable starting point. Treatment Options That Work
If your test comes back with elevated PFAS, treatment is available and it works. Three approaches have solid track records for removing PFAS from well water.
Granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration. GAC systems pass water through carbon media that adsorbs PFAS molecules. These can be installed as whole-house point-of-entry systems or as point-of-use systems at a specific tap. The carbon requires periodic replacement as it becomes saturated.

Ion exchange resin. Certain anion exchange resins remove PFAS effectively and are sometimes used as whole-house treatment or in combination with GAC. They require periodic resin replacement or regeneration.
Choosing between these depends on the specific compounds detected, the concentrations, and whether you want to treat all household water or focus on drinking and cooking water. A point-of-use RO system is often the most practical starting point for drinking water. For whole-house coverage, GAC or ion exchange makes more sense. We test before we recommend.
