Why infants sit in a different category
An adult's body filters and compensates for a lot. An infant's doesn't. They drink more water relative to their body weight, their kidneys are still developing, and their systems react differently to contaminants a grown body handles without trouble. The main contaminants that matter specifically for infants are nitrates, coliform bacteria, and lead. None of these are unique to infant safety, but they're worth knowing in the context of a new baby at home.
Nitrates: the main concern for infants under six months
Nitrates come from a few places on rural land. Septic systems leaching into the surrounding soil and groundwater. Agricultural fertilizers spreading across fields over time. Animal waste near shallow water sources. Adults handle nitrates without much trouble. For infants under six months, the situation is different.
When infants ingest high nitrate levels, a condition called methemoglobinemia can develop. It interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen. It's sometimes called blue baby syndrome because in severe cases a baby's skin turns bluish. It's rare, but the EPA set the nitrate limit at 10 milligrams per liter specifically to protect infants, not adults. Adults can tolerate higher levels without harm.

Coliform and E. coli: the ongoing bacteria concern
Coliform bacteria and E. coli can get into a well after heavy rain, flooding, or from a deteriorating well seal. Healthy adults who pick up a bacterial infection from their well water usually feel sick for a few days and recover. For infants, the stakes are higher. Their immune systems are still developing and they dehydrate fast when sick.

Lead: often from the house, not the well
Most Texas rural properties don't have an aquifer lead problem. Lead in household water typically comes from pipes and fixtures in older homes, not from the well itself. If your house has plumbing from before 1986, there's a reasonable chance of lead solder at pipe joints or lead in older fixtures. Infant brains are particularly sensitive to lead exposure, with effects on development that can be serious.

This isn't a safety hazard the way nitrates and bacteria are. It's a gap that often goes unnoticed when families move from city water to a well.
What to do before the baby arrives
Order a water test. The standard coliform and E. coli test is a good baseline. For an infant-specific panel, add nitrates and lead. Most certified labs accept a water sample shipped by mail. A well that tested clean within the last year may not need a full retest, but if it's been a while, or if you haven't tested since moving in, do it before the baby comes home.
For timing, testing early in the pregnancy is easiest. That gives you time to address anything that comes up before the due date, whether that's shock chlorinating a bacteria issue, installing a filter for lead, or confirming nitrate levels are well below the limit. If a contaminant comes back high
Don't wait to act. The fix depends on what the test found.
