Short Cycling: Rapid Clicking On and Off
Short cycling is one of the most common pump problems people notice as a sound before they notice it as a water pressure problem. The pump kicks on, runs for a second or two, then shuts off. On again. Off again. Fast. That rapid clicking, or the sound of the motor starting and stopping repeatedly, is not the pump failing. It is almost always the pressure tank.
The bladder inside your pressure tank holds pressurized water so the pump does not have to run every time you turn on a faucet. When that bladder fails, the tank cannot hold the air charge that cushions the water pressure. The pump then tries to do the bladder's job alone. It cycles every few seconds instead of every few minutes. The tank is worn out. The pump itself is often fine.
Catching short cycling early matters because a pump that cycles all day wears out faster than one that runs normally. Left alone, a failed bladder becomes a dead pump. Humming with No Water
The pump sounds like it is running. You can hear the motor hum. But water is not coming out of your faucets, or it is down to a trickle. This one deserves serious attention. A pump that is running but not moving water is working against resistance it cannot overcome, and it can burn out the motor if you leave it running too long.
A few causes land here. The pump could be air-locked, which happens when air gets into the line. The pump could be struggling to draw from a well that is running low. The pump itself may be failing internally due to a motor or impeller problem. Or there could be a blockage at the pump intake.
Shut the pump off until you know what is causing it. A pump humming against a dry well or a blocked intake is burning itself out. Grinding or Screeching
A grinding sound or a high-pitched screech coming from the pump area points to a worn bearing, a failing motor, or debris caught in the impeller. Submersible pumps run below the water line down in the well, so you will not always hear the pump directly. What you might hear is the sound coming up through the piping or the pressure tank vibrating from a struggling pump below ground.
This one does not fix itself. A grinding pump almost always ends in motor failure, and when that happens you lose water entirely. Clicking at the Pressure Switch
The pressure switch is a small part mounted near the pressure tank that tells the pump when to turn on and off. It clicks when the pump starts and when it stops. That click is normal. What is not normal is constant clicking, clicking that never seems to pause, or a loud sustained click when nothing else is happening in the house.
A pressure switch with corroded contacts, a worn spring, or a stuck mechanism can click repeatedly without the pump actually starting or stopping correctly. Sometimes the fix is replacing the switch. Sometimes the contacts are corroded and can be cleaned. Either way, a clicking switch that does not match normal pump cycling is worth having looked at before it fails completely and leaves you without pressure.
Gurgling or Banging in the Pipes
Gurgling water sounds or banging pipes when the pump kicks on or off usually point to one of two things: air in the system or water hammer. Air in the line can get in through a well that is running low and pulling air along with water, or through a crack in the casing above the water level. Water hammer happens when a pump stops suddenly and the column of water in the pipe slams back. Both can damage fittings and pipe joints over time if you ignore them.

Noise That Moves with the Pressure Cycle
Some pump noises are tied to the pressure cycle, and that pattern tells you something. A vibration that starts when the pump kicks on and fades when it shuts off points toward the pump or the pipe connections near the pressure tank. A noise that shows up as pressure drops and quiets as pressure builds points more toward the tank or the switch. Keeping track of when you hear it and what the pressure gauge reads at the same moment gives us useful information before we even arrive at the property.
If you have a pressure gauge on your system, note the reading when you hear the noise. Normal operating range for most residential wells is 40 to 60 PSI.
