But they do it differently, and the right call depends on your land and how you use it.

How a Standard Pressure Tank System Works
A standard system has three parts working together: a submersible pump in the well, a pressure tank above ground, and a pressure switch that tells the pump when to run. The tank holds water under pressure. When the pressure in the tank drops to the cut-in point, commonly 40 PSI, the pump starts and refills the tank. When it reaches the cut-out point, commonly 60 PSI, the pump shuts off. Your faucets get water from the tank while it cycles between those two pressures.
The result is that your water pressure fluctuates slightly. It starts at the high end when the tank is full and drops as you use water, then the pump refills it and pressure climbs back up. On most well systems, you'd never notice the swing. The tank buffers it, and the whole thing runs quietly in the background.
Standard systems are time-tested, straightforward to maintain, and easy to diagnose when something fails. A pressure switch, a bladder, or a pump motor can be replaced by any licensed driller. They cost less to install and less to repair. For most rural Texas homesteads, standard is the right system.
How a Constant Pressure System Works
A constant pressure system adds a variable frequency drive (VFD) to the pump motor. Instead of running at full speed or stopping completely, the motor speeds up and slows down in real time to match your demand. Open one faucet and it runs slowly. Run the irrigation, flush two toilets, and run the kitchen tap at the same time and it speeds up to keep pressure steady. The pump runs more often but at lower speeds, which can extend motor life in high-demand setups.
The main benefit is steady pressure. No swing between 40 and 60 PSI. You hold at a set point, say 60 PSI, across the full range of what the well can produce. That matters most when multiple things are drawing water at the same time.
When Constant Pressure Makes Sense
A few situations make constant pressure worth considering for a rural Texas property.
First: heavy simultaneous demand. Big households with irrigation, stock tanks, and a barn water line all pulling from the same well can create demand swings that a smaller standard system struggles to buffer. Constant pressure handles those swings without the pressure drop you'd otherwise see.
Second: an irrigation-heavy property. Large sprinkler zones or precision drip irrigation call for consistent pressure to run right. Small setups work fine on a standard tank, but high-zone or precision irrigation can benefit from steady output.
Third: a high-yield well in deep formation. When a well produces strong flow and the pump cycles frequently anyway, the VFD reduces wear by letting the motor ramp gradually instead of hard-starting and stopping repeatedly.
Fourth: you've budgeted for it and you want it. That's a valid reason. There's nothing wrong with choosing constant pressure because you want consistent pressure and peace of mind. Know what you're buying and make sure your well can support it.
When a Standard System Is the Right Call
Standard systems are the right call for most rural Texas homesteads. A household of two to six people with a garden, a couple of bathrooms, and normal kitchen use doesn't need a VFD. The pressure variation on a standard tank is small enough that most families never notice it. The system costs less to install, less to maintain, and is easier to diagnose when something goes wrong.
Standard systems also make sense when your well produces at a moderate rate. Constant pressure doesn't add water that isn't there. If the aquifer is on the slower side and the pump is already working to keep up, adding a VFD changes how the motor runs but doesn't change how much water the well produces. What About Upgrading an Existing Standard System?
If your standard system is working, there's no reason to change it. If it's giving you problems, start with a diagnosis. Pressure that drops every time you run the dishwasher isn't automatically a case for a constant pressure upgrade. Nine times out of ten that's a waterlogged tank or an undersized tank, and fixing the tank solves it for far less than a retrofit. If after that you still want to upgrade, a VFD controller can be added to most existing submersible pump setups without pulling the pump.
