Portable generator with a manual transfer switch. This is a gas or propane generator you own, store, and start by hand when the power goes out. The up-front cost is lower. You need to be home when it happens, have fuel on hand, and connect it properly through a transfer switch. For people who want protection without a major installation, this is a workable path.

Whole-property standby generator with automatic transfer. This is hardwired to your property and starts itself within seconds of a power outage. It runs on a propane tank or a natural gas connection. More expensive to install and it needs periodic maintenance, but it requires nothing from you in the moment. You wake up, the power is off next door, and your lights and well are still running.

Which one fits depends on how often your area loses power, how long those outages run, how many animals or people depend on the water, and whether you are typically on the property when storms hit. There is no single right answer.

The transfer switch: not optional

This is the part most people try to skip. It is the part that matters most for safety.

You cannot plug a generator directly into a standard outlet and run your well from it safely. Doing that without a transfer switch puts power back onto the utility grid through your meter. How much reserve you have depends on the tank size and how charged it was when the outage hit. For a one-hour outage with a typical household tank, you may get through it. For anything longer, do not count on it.

A pressure tank that has lost its air charge will hold almost nothing. The air bladder is what gives you the reserve. A prolonged pump shutdown can pull air into the system. Flooding near the well head is a contamination risk. A freeze can crack a line or a fitting.

After a major event, run a couple of taps until the water looks clear and any air is purged. Then test. When the outage reveals a problem that was already there

The system cycles constantly. In those cases, the outage did not cause the trouble. It exposed something that was already going wrong.
