There are few worse moments on rural land than walking to the kitchen at six in the morning and getting nothing from the tap. The pressure gauge is flat. The pump is silent. Everything on the property depends on that water. The animals, the shower, the toilets, the morning coffee. If the water is not right, nothing else on the land works.
Before we get into what we do, here is the principle behind every emergency call we run. Most well companies roll up ready to sell a new system. At J4 Water Works we do not. We test the parts first and fix what is actually broken. A failed pump call is where that rule saves people the most money, because a pump is a part, not the well. Fixing a part costs a fraction of drilling a new hole.
Three things to check before you call
These take under two minutes and can save you a service call entirely.
The breaker. Well pumps run on their own dedicated circuit. Go to your breaker box and look for the circuit labeled well pump or pump. If it tripped, reset it. If it holds and water comes back, you are done. If it trips again, stop there and call us. A breaker that keeps tripping means the pump is drawing too much current. That is a diagnostic clue, not a reset-and-hope situation.
The pressure switch. That small box near your pressure tank has a switch cover over it. If the switch contacts corroded or burned, the pump will not get the signal to start. This is one of the cheapest fixes in all of well service, and it looks exactly like a dead pump from the outside.
The pressure gauge. A gauge stuck at zero when the pump runs means pressure is not building. A gauge that pulses wildly often points to the tank rather than the pump. Take a photo of your gauge reading so you can show us on the phone.

What the first call sounds like
When you call us, we are going to ask a few quick questions. This is not to slow you down. It is so we show up with the right equipment on the truck.
We will ask: When did you last have water? Is the pump making any sound at all? What does the pressure gauge read? Have you had power outages or lightning recently? How old is the system, if you know? We will confirm your county so we can route the crew from El Campo. That call takes three to five minutes. It often tells us the likely cause before we leave the shop. If we suspect a wiring fault, we bring wire and the meter. If we suspect pump failure, we bring a replacement matched to your setup. We show up, we explain it, we get it done.
What we do on site before touching anything
The diagnose-before-replace rule applies twice as hard on an emergency call, because urgency is exactly when shortcuts happen. We do not take shortcuts when the answer might cost you thousands of dollars.
When the crew arrives, they run the tests first. They check voltage at the control box. They read the pump's amperage draw while it is running, or trying to. They look at the pressure tank to see whether it is waterlogged or holding air correctly. They check the pressure switch contacts. They test the wiring between the surface controls and the pump down in the well.
Those readings together tell a clear story. A pump pulling full amperage but moving no water points one direction. A pump that will not start despite good voltage points another. A pump that runs but short-cycles points to the tank, and telling the tank from the pump is its own short lesson worth having.
The most common reasons a well pump stops
Here is what we see week in and week out on emergency calls. None of these require a new well. Some do not even require a new pump.
- Capacitor or control box failure. The control box sits above ground and houses the capacitor that starts the motor. Capacitors fail. When they do, the motor cannot start even though the pump itself is fine.
- Pressure switch failure. A burned or corroded pressure switch breaks the signal between the tank and the pump. It is a common failure point, especially after lightning. It looks like a dead pump from where you are standing.
- Pump motor burnout. Motors wear out. When one goes, the pump has to come out of the well and get replaced. This is a real job, but it is not a reason to drill a new well.
- Wiring failure. The wire running from your surface controls down to the submersible pump is underground. Over time, rodents, age, voltage spikes, or a careless shovel can open that circuit.
- Check valve failure. A check valve keeps water from draining back down after the pump stops. When it fails, the system loses prime, the pump runs dry trying to reprime, and you can end up with a motor that shut down to protect itself.
What happens when we pull the pump
If the pump needs to come out, here is what that looks like. We pull the drop pipe and pump from the well, bringing up everything below the wellhead. We inspect the pump on the surface, test the motor windings, and make the call: repair or replace. If the motor is salvageable, we say so. If it is done, we tell you why in plain terms and quote the replacement in writing before we do the work.
Once the replacement is ready, we drop it back to the correct depth, reconnect the wire, secure the drop pipe, and reinstall the wellhead. Then we run the system. We test pressure, run water through the house system if access allows, and watch the pump cycle to confirm everything is balanced. Done right beats done fast. We do not rush the end-of-job test.
Your water is running. What comes next.
Once the system is running, we do not pack up and drive off. We walk you through what we found and what we fixed. We show you what to watch for going forward. We make sure you know where the shutoffs are and what normal pressure looks like on your system.
Once you are back to running water, a few habits extend pump life and prevent the next midnight call.
Watch your pressure tank. A waterlogged tank makes the pump short-cycle, meaning it starts and stops dozens of times a day instead of running full cycles. Short-cycling is hard on the motor. That is a maintenance fix, not an emergency, but it is one that protects the pump you are relying on and it is the main thing that decides how long a pump lasts out here.
Check the pressure gauge periodically. Normal operating pressure on a rural well typically runs between 40 and 60 PSI, or 30 and 50 PSI depending on how the system was set up. Readings outside that range or that bounce erratically are a sign the system wants attention before it demands an emergency call.
Test your water at least once a year. A well that tested clean a few years ago can pick up iron bacteria or other changes as conditions shift.
