If you woke up to no water after a Texas freeze, you are not alone. Hard freezes roll through the Gulf Coast region with less warning than people expect, and rural water systems take the hit first. No city water main to fall back on. No building maintenance crew to call. You, the well, and a system that may or may not have made it through the night intact. Here is what to do, in order.

Before you do anything else, do not assume the pump is dead. A freeze can cause a loss of water pressure without destroying the pump itself. Pipes burst, pipe fittings crack, heat tape fails, or a thaw creates a temporary airlock. Some of these problems are cheap fixes. Going straight to the conclusion that you need a new pump can cost you more than the freeze did. Diagnose before you replace.
Step 1: Check What You Can See Without Opening Anything
Do a quick visual check of everything accessible. Look at the wellhead above ground. Look at the pump house or any area where the pressure tank sits. Look at the pipe runs you can see near the house. You are looking for visible fractures, joints that have pulled apart, or sections where ice expanded and cracked the line.
If you see a pipe that is clearly cracked or burst, that tells you where part of the problem is. That section will need to be replaced before the system will hold pressure. Mark it and move on. There may be more than one damaged section.
Also check whether you have electricity at the pump. Freeze events often knock out power, and a pump that has no electricity is not a broken pump. Check your breaker box. Check whether your pump's circuit tripped. A tripped breaker after a freeze can mean the pump tried to start against a frozen line and the motor protection cut it off. That is the system working as designed, not a failure.
Step 2: Let Things Thaw Before You Test
If temperatures are still below freezing when you discover the problem, wait. Testing a system while lines are still frozen can damage the pump further. You cannot get an accurate pressure reading with ice in the line, and pushing a pump to run against a frozen blockage risks burning out the motor.
If you have heat tape on exposed lines, check whether it is still energized. If it failed during the freeze, the line it was protecting may still be frozen even after outside temperatures rise. A hair dryer or a heat lamp can help thaw accessible frozen sections. Work from the wellhead toward the house, not from the house back, so thawed water has somewhere to go as it opens up.
Step 3: Do a Pressure Test After the Thaw
Once temperatures are above freezing and the obvious ice has cleared, check the pressure tank. Look at the pressure gauge if you have one accessible. A system that holds pressure after the thaw is a good sign. A system that reads zero or drops to zero right away tells you water is escaping somewhere.
If pressure drops immediately, you have at least one leak. That might be the burst pipe you already found, or there may be another one you have not located yet. Walk your accessible pipe runs again now that the ice has cleared. Look for dripping, spraying, or wet soil where there should not be any.
A waterlogged pressure tank can also cause problems that look like freeze damage. If the tank bladder fails during a temperature swing, the system behaves erratically. Test the pressure tank by tapping it: a properly charged tank sounds hollow at the bottom and solid at the top. If the whole tank sounds solid, the bladder may have failed and the tank needs replacement. More on that in our when to replace a pressure tank.
Step 4: Check the Pump Itself
If the lines are clear, pressure holds in the exposed sections, and the tank looks intact, the next question is the pump. Try to restore power to the pump if you had cut it as a precaution. Listen for the pump to run. A submersible pump that runs normally will show rising pressure on the gauge.
If the pump runs but pressure does not rise, the pump may have lost its prime or the foot valve may have frozen and failed. If the pump runs briefly and then the breaker trips again, the pump may be working against a blockage, or the motor may have been damaged during the freeze. If the pump does not run at all with power restored, the motor may be burned out, or a control box component may have failed.
None of these is automatic proof you need a new pump. A lost prime on certain well setups is a repair. A burned capacitor in a control box is a cheap fix. Even a burned motor is sometimes a repair rather than a full pump replacement, depending on the pump and the age. Step 5: Call for Service
If you have worked through steps one through four and the system is not running, it is time to call. When you call J4 Water Works, we will ask what you found during your check. Tell us. The more information you have gathered, the faster the diagnosis goes when we get there.

Once the system is running again, it is worth thinking about what made it vulnerable to begin with. Exposed pipe runs, a pump house with gaps in the siding, heat tape that was not replaced when it wore out, or a wellhead without a proper cover are all things that can be addressed before the next hard freeze hits.
