Texas doesn't get hard freezes every winter. That's exactly why rural Texas homes aren't built for them. Pump houses with no insulation, pipes that run along the outside of a well house wall, pressure tanks sitting in unheated outbuildings. When temperatures stay in the twenties or below for more than a day or two, all of that becomes vulnerable in ways that pipes in colder climates never are, because those systems are built expecting it. After Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, we heard from a lot of families across our 8-county footprint who had no water and didn't know why. Some thought the pump died. Some thought the well was damaged. Most of the time it was something much simpler and much cheaper to fix. Here's what you can do before the next hard freeze to avoid that call entirely.

What Can Freeze and What Can't

The well itself, the hole in the ground, is not at risk. Water underground stays well above freezing even in the worst Texas cold snaps because soil temperature several feet down stays relatively stable. What freezes is everything above ground: the pipes between the wellhead and the pump house, the pressure tank if it sits in an unheated space, the wellhead cap and the area around it, and any exposed pipe running from the pump house to the house.

The wellhead is where the casing pipe sticks up out of the ground and connects to the system. A freeze at that point, or in the lines just above it, can shut water off even though the well and pump are perfectly fine. A frozen pipe is not a broken pump. A tripped breaker from an electrical surge during the storm is not a dead system. Knowing the difference saves you real money.

What to Do Before the Freeze Hits

Preparation is simple work that takes an afternoon and costs a fraction of what an emergency service call runs in the middle of a cold snap.

Insulate exposed pipes. Any pipe running above ground from the wellhead to the pump house, or from the pump house to the home, is at risk. Foam pipe wrap insulation from the hardware store fits most pipe sizes and goes on easily. For pipes in particularly exposed spots, electrical heat tape under the foam wrap holds the pipe temperature above freezing as long as power is on. Heat tape is inexpensive and available at most rural hardware stores.

Address the pump house. A basic well house with gaps in the walls and no heat source isn't ready for a Texas hard freeze. Fill gaps around the walls, door, and where pipes enter and exit. A single incandescent bulb left on inside a small enclosed pump house generates enough heat to keep it above freezing in most Texas cold events. A small ceramic space heater on a thermostat set to 35-40 degrees is more reliable for a sustained freeze. Do not use open-coil heaters or combustion heaters in a small enclosed space.

Insulate the pressure tank. If your pressure tank sits in a pump house or shed that gets cold, wrap the tank and the connecting pipes. A tank that freezes and cracks is an expensive fix that a few dollars of insulation prevents.

Drip the faucets. When a hard freeze is forecast, let indoor faucets farthest from the water entry point drip slowly. Moving water is much harder to freeze than still water. Open both the hot and cold sides, because the hot-side pipe can freeze too if it runs through an unheated space. A slow drip from each tap is enough.

Know where your shutoff is. If something does freeze and crack, you need to turn the water off fast. Know where the main shutoff is between the pressure tank and the house, and make sure it turns freely before the weather hits. A valve that's been sitting untouched for years can seize. Exercise it before the cold comes.

During a Hard Freeze

Keep an eye on the pump house temperature if you have a thermometer in it. Confirm any heat tape or space heater is running. Keep the drip going on indoor faucets. If water stops during the freeze, resist the urge to run the pump. A pump running dry overheats. Turn the breaker off and wait for the temperature to rise above freezing before troubleshooting.

After the Freeze: Diagnose Before You Replace

Most well and septic companies sell a whole new system when something stops working. We test the parts first and fix what's actually broken. Post-freeze calls are where that rule matters most, because the most common causes of no water after a Texas freeze are not dead pumps or blown systems. They're frozen pipes that have now thawed, tripped breakers from electrical activity during the storm, and pressure switches that stuck from the cold and didn't reset on their own.

Before you call anyone, run through this checklist. First: check the breaker for the well pump. A breaker that tripped during the freeze might be all that stands between you and water. Reset it if it tripped and wait a few minutes. Second: check the pressure switch on the system to make sure it's seated correctly. Third: check the pressure gauge on the tank. If the needle sits at zero after the breaker reset and a few minutes of wait, something is still blocked or broken. Fourth: walk the exposed pipes and look for visible cracking, wet spots, or bulging sections that would show a pipe that burst during the freeze.

If you see pipe damage, shut off the water and call us. Fixing Freeze Damage Once You Find It

A cracked pipe that burst during a freeze is a repair, not a replace-everything situation. The damaged section gets cut out and replaced. A pressure tank that cracked is a tank swap, not a system overhaul. Even if the pump took damage from running dry during the freeze, a pump is a part in a good well.
