When a pressure switch fails, the symptoms look a lot like a dying pump or a bad pressure tank. That's the problem. Companies that don't diagnose before they quote can send you down the wrong road fast. We've seen homeowners spend money on a pump replacement that didn't fix anything because nobody checked the switch first. That's exactly the kind of thing we're out to prevent.

What a Pressure Switch Actually Does
Inside the pressure switch there are two contact points and a spring-loaded diaphragm that senses your system pressure. Most Texas wells run on a 30/50 setting, meaning the pump comes on at 30 PSI and cuts off at 50 PSI. Some systems run 40/60. The gap between cut-in and cut-out is called the differential, and getting it right matters. Too small a differential and the pump short-cycles. Too large and the pressure swings noticeably every time you run water.

Signs Your Pressure Switch Is Failing
Pressure switch failures don't always look the same. Here are the patterns we see most often.
Pump Runs Nonstop
If your pump never shuts off, or shuts off for a few seconds and then immediately kicks back on, the switch may not be reading system pressure correctly. It stays closed when it should open. This symptom also shows up with a waterlogged pressure tank, so the two have to be sorted out together. We test both on the same visit.
Pump Won't Start at All
If the switch contacts are corroded or burned out, the circuit to the pump never closes. The pump gets no signal. Check the breaker first. If the breaker is fine and the pump is still silent, the switch is a real suspect.
Pressure That Surges or Drops Randomly
Water pressure that swings at the tap, strong one minute and weak the next. Sometimes this is air in the lines. Sometimes it's a switch making contact erratically. Watching the system cycle in real time tells us which it is.
Clicking or Buzzing Near the Pressure Tank
A switch that's struggling to hold contact sometimes clicks rapidly. It's a fast clicking or ticking sound coming from near the tank. That's the switch trying to close, partially making contact, and cycling. It means the contacts are going.
Visible Corrosion or Burn Marks
When we open the switch cover, corroded contact points or dark discoloration tell us the switch has been working harder than it should. Out here near the Gulf Coast, humidity gets into everything that isn't well-protected, and unprotected electrical components pay for it over time.
One thing worth saying clearly: a failing switch doesn't always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it just gives you a slow pressure decline over a few days. A lot of homeowners assume the pump is dying. Sometimes it is. But often the switch is what's wrong, and that fix costs a fraction of a pump replacement. How We Diagnose It
When we arrive, we don't skip straight to a recommendation. We work through the system in order.
We check the pressure gauge to see what the system is holding. We look at the breaker and wiring to rule out a simple electrical issue. We watch the switch behavior while running a faucet, noting whether the pump kicks on and off at the expected pressure settings. Common Causes We See Out Here
Humidity and Corrosion
Gulf Coast humidity is hard on unprotected electrical components. Pressure switches in poorly ventilated spots, or near any source of water vapor or a small drip, corrode from the inside. The contacts oxidize and fail to make a clean connection. This is the number one cause of switch failure in our service area.
Fire Ants
Not a joke. Fire ants nest in warm, dry enclosures, and a pressure switch housing is exactly what they're looking for. We've opened switch covers and found complete ant nests inside. The ants bridge the contacts or pack the housing with debris, and the switch starts behaving erratically. After a dry summer, this is worth checking before assuming something is mechanically wrong.
Age and Worn Components
The spring and diaphragm inside the switch wear down over time. If your switch is more than 10 to 15 years old and the system is giving you trouble, replacing it is often the right move. The part itself is not expensive.
Settings That Got Changed
If someone adjusted the cut-in and cut-out settings incorrectly during a prior service call, the pump may short-cycle or your pressure may swing more than normal. If your system started behaving differently after a prior service visit, this is worth checking.
Replacing a Pressure Switch
Labor to swap one out is quick work on a straightforward system.
The things to do right: match the amperage rating to your pump. A mismatch causes the contacts to burn out prematurely. Depressurize the system before removing the old switch. Set the cut-in and cut-out pressures correctly for your tank and pump. Clean the inlet port on the switch fitting, because mineral deposits build up there over time and block the diaphragm from reading pressure accurately.
