This problem is frustrating because one part of the system looks normal while the kitchen faucet stays dry. A gauge near the pressure tank can show pressure even when water cannot travel through the house line. A pump can also run, stop, or act normally while a valve, wire, filter, or buried pipe keeps water from reaching the building.
Water at the well tank does not prove that water can reach the house. The tank, controls, buried line, and house plumbing all need to be checked.
Start with the safest checks
Before you open an electrical panel, remove a cover, or dig near a buried line, look at the simple items you can see. Make sure the main water shutoff near the pressure tank and the shutoff where the line enters the house are open. A valve that was closed during maintenance, freeze preparation, or another repair can stop the whole home from receiving water.
Look at the pressure gauge by the tank. A reading above zero tells you the tank has pressure at that location. It does not tell you whether the pressure holds, whether water can pass the next valve, or whether the line to the house is intact. Watch for a gauge that drops quickly after a faucet is opened. That can point to a supply problem, a leak, or a control issue that needs testing.
Check whether every fixture is dry. If one faucet works but another does not, the trouble may be inside the home's plumbing. If the house has no water anywhere, the well-to-house supply path deserves attention. Ask whether the problem began suddenly or developed over time. Sudden loss often points to a failed control, a closed valve, an electrical event, or a break. Gradual loss can fit a clogged filter, a leak, or a pump and pressure problem.
Common reasons water stops between the tank and house
A closed or failed valve
A shutoff valve can be partly closed, stuck, or damaged inside. The handle may appear to be in the open position while the valve still restricts flow. Do not force an old valve. A broken stem can create another leak and make the repair harder.
A clogged whole-house filter
Some rural properties have a sediment filter or treatment equipment between the pressure tank and the home. When a cartridge fills with sand or other material, the pressure gauge at the tank can look fine while the house receives little or no flow. Bypass settings and filter housings should be checked carefully. If the filter is under pressure, follow the equipment's shutoff and pressure-release procedure.
Treatment equipment can also have a valve position or control problem. If the home recently had a filter change, service visit, or plumbing work, that timing matters. Take a picture of the equipment before changing settings so the original position is documented.
A leak in the buried well line
The pipe from the well to the house may be leaking underground. Sometimes you will see wet soil, a soft area, unexpected grass growth, or water moving toward a low spot. You may see none of those signs, especially in dry weather or where the line runs under a driveway. A buried leak can also cause the pump to cycle more often as the system tries to maintain pressure.
Do not dig based on a guess. Buried utilities and the exact route of the water line need to be considered first. A technician can isolate sections of the system and test whether pressure holds on the well side and the house side.
A pressure control or electrical problem
The pressure switch, control box, disconnect, breaker, or wiring may keep the pump from responding correctly. This is where a tank reading can be misleading. The tank may have stored pressure, but once the house uses that water, the pump may not restart. If a breaker is tripping, leave it off and call for help. Repeated resets can damage equipment or create an electrical hazard.

A damaged connection or frozen section
Cold weather can damage exposed piping, fittings, pressure equipment, and sections near the house. A line can also be damaged by construction, vehicle traffic, settling soil, or tree roots. Even when the Texas Gulf Coast has a mild winter, one hard freeze can find a weak fitting.
What to check before calling for service
Write down what you know. Is the pressure gauge holding steady? Is the pump running? Is the breaker on? Is there water at an outside faucet near the tank? Are all house fixtures dry? Has a filter, softener, or treatment system been installed in the supply path? These details help the person diagnosing the system start in the right place.
Keep children and pets away from wet ground around electrical equipment.
Don't open a pressure tank, control box, or filter housing while it is pressurized.
Don't keep resetting a tripped breaker.
Don't add chemicals or pour products into the well because the house has lost water.
Don't assume a new pump will fix a blocked or leaking line.
If you have a backup water source, use it carefully and keep drinking water separate from water that may have contacted a damaged line. If the system was flooded, or if dirty water entered the well area, stop using the water for drinking until the source and water quality have been evaluated. A pressure problem and a water-quality problem are separate questions.

A no-water call can involve the pump, pressure tank, switch, electrical controls, treatment equipment, buried supply line, or house plumbing. You should also get a plain explanation of the repair choices. If a valve is the problem, replacing the well is not the answer. If a buried line is leaking, a pump replacement will not solve it. If the pump cannot produce the needed pressure, the rest of the system still needs to be checked so the replacement matches the property and the existing equipment.
