Turn on a faucet and it coughs. Water comes out in bursts, spitting air between each push. It settles after a few seconds, or it keeps going. You've had the well for years and never saw this, or it's gotten worse lately. Either way, air is getting into the lines somewhere it shouldn't be. The good news is it's almost always a part problem, not a well problem. Here are the four most common causes and how to tell which one you have before you spend a dollar on anything.

Why air gets into the lines at all

A properly working well system is a closed loop. The pump brings water up from the aquifer, the pressure tank holds it under pressure, and your faucets draw from that stored supply. No air enters that loop under normal conditions. When air starts showing up at the tap, something has broken that seal. It comes from one of four places.

Cause 1: A waterlogged pressure tank

Your pressure tank has a rubber bladder inside. One side holds air at a set pressure. The other side holds water. The bladder keeps them separated. When the bladder fails, the air and water mix. Now every time the pump cycles, air gets pushed through the system along with the water, and you feel it at the tap as that sputtering.

Signs this is your cause: the pump runs for a few seconds, shuts off, then kicks back on quickly. The sputtering is consistent no matter when you run the water. Knock on the tank and it sounds hollow.

Cause 2: The well is running low

A submersible pump sits down in the well below the waterline. That's how it pushes water up to the house. When the water level drops far enough, the pump starts drawing in air along with whatever water remains. The result at the tap is the same sputtering, but now it means the well itself needs attention, not a part replacement.

This happens most often in summer during extended dry stretches, when the water table drops faster than the aquifer can recover. It can also happen on a well that was drilled shallower than it should have been, or one that's been in the ground for a long time. We covered this fully in our wells running low during drought.

Signs this is your cause: the sputtering is worse right after heavy use, or in the early morning after a dry stretch. There's a pressure drop before the air shows up. The problem got worse as summer stretched on.

Cause 3: A failed check valve

There's a check valve on the pump line that keeps water from falling back down the well between pump cycles. When that valve sticks open or wears out, the water column drops back down after the pump shuts off. Air rushes in to fill the gap. The next time the pump runs, it pushes that air column up through the pipes first.

A failed check valve often shows up as a brief burst of air right when the pump first starts, then the water clears and runs normal. You may also hear a thudding sound when the pump shuts off, from the water column falling quickly. This gets missed when a company skips testing and goes straight to a quote.

Cause 4: A cracked vent or loose fitting

Some well systems have a relief valve or air vent that develops a crack or a worn seal over time. Pipe connections that work loose or corrode can let outside air get pulled into the line under certain pressure conditions. This is less common than the first three causes but worth ruling out, especially on older systems or after any recent service work.

One faucet versus all of them

Before you chase down a system-wide cause, check whether the sputtering is coming from one faucet or from every tap in the house. If it's only one, the issue may be air trapped in that specific branch line, not a system-wide problem. This happens when a line drains completely (during a repair, for example) and gets an air pocket on refill. Running that faucet wide open for a minute usually clears it on its own. If it comes back, or if the sputtering is in every faucet, you're looking at one of the four causes above.

How to tell which cause you have

You don't need to guess. A few checks at the pressure tank will narrow it down.

First, check the air pre-charge on the tank. Turn off the pump, open a faucet to bleed pressure down to zero, then press a tire gauge against the Schrader valve on the tank. On a 30/50 pressure system, you should read about 28 psi. A reading near zero means the bladder is gone and the tank is waterlogged.

Second, watch how fast the pump cycles. A pump that runs for ten seconds, shuts off, then kicks back on ten seconds later is a classic waterlogged tank pattern. A pump that runs a long time before shutting off, or struggles to build pressure, may be drawing from a low well.

What to do once you know the cause

Waterlogged pressure tank: replace the tank. The pump, wiring, and well stay untouched. It's a direct swap.

Well running low: the answer depends on how low. A pump close to the bottom of a dropping water table may need to be lowered deeper into the hole. A well that's genuinely tapped out needs to be deepened or replaced. We test the water level and pump output before we recommend which path, so you don't pay for more than the well actually needs.

Failed check valve: replace the valve. On a submersible pump system, the valve is usually on the pump body, which means pulling the pump. That's not a small job, but it's far less than a new pump or a new well, and it solves the problem cleanly.

Cracked vent or loose fitting: tighten, seal, or replace the affected part. A licensed crew can find and fix a leak point in a single visit.

Don't let it run too long

Air in the lines won't hurt the water quality itself. But a waterlogged tank that forces the pump to short-cycle repeatedly wears out the pump motor faster than it should. A check valve left failed means repeated water hammer stress on your pipe joints. Small things that get ignored become bigger things. Catch it early and you're usually looking at a part. Let it run for months and you may be looking at a pump replacement on top of the original fix.
