If your septic system fails, the drain field is usually the part that gave out first. Drain fields do not fail randomly. They fail because something specific was done to them, sometimes for years before the backup happens. The frustrating part is that most of these causes are avoidable once you know what they are.

What a drain field actually does

In a conventional septic system, the tank takes solids out of the wastewater and holds them. The liquid, called effluent, flows out from the tank into the drain field, which is a network of perforated pipes buried in gravel or engineered fill. The effluent spreads through that field and filters slowly into the soil, where bacteria break down what is left.

The drain field depends on the soil staying loose enough to absorb. When the soil's absorption capacity is gone, the liquid has nowhere to go. That is when you start seeing pooling in the yard, slow drains, or sewage backing up into the house.

Six things that routinely destroy drain fields

1. Solids overflow from the tank

This is the most common cause. If the septic tank is not pumped on schedule, the solid layer builds until it starts flowing into the drain field. Solids are not supposed to get into the field at all. They clog the perforated pipes and coat the soil so it cannot absorb. Once that happens, much of the damage is permanent. 2. Flushing things that do not break down

Flushable wipes are not. Paper towels are not. Feminine hygiene products, coffee grounds, grease poured down the drain, none of these break down fast enough in a conventional system. They either clog the tank outlet, build up in the distribution box, or reach the drain field and coat it. We wrote a whole article on what flushable wipes actually do to septic systems.

3. Overloading with too much water at once

A drain field is sized for your household's normal daily water use. Running five loads of laundry back to back, or a broken toilet running for hours, can flood the field with more water than it can handle at once. This saturates the soil and collapses its structure over time. Spread laundry over several days. Fix running toilets fast. These two habits protect more drain fields than almost anything else.

4. Driving or parking over the field

Soil compaction is fatal to a drain field. A truck, tractor, or loaded trailer parked on the grass above the field compresses the soil, crushes the pipes, and eliminates the air pockets the drainage process depends on. 5. Tree and shrub roots

Roots seek water. A buried drain field full of effluent is what a tree root is looking for. Once roots get into the distribution pipes, they block flow and eventually crack the pipes. 6. Harsh chemicals down the drain

Antibacterial soaps, bleach-heavy cleaning products, and chemical drain cleaners kill the bacterial population in the tank and in the soil. Those bacteria are what process the effluent. When the bacterial population crashes, the effluent stops breaking down properly, and the field clogs faster. We keep a list of septic-safe cleaning products for exactly this reason.

Signs your drain field is under stress

  • Slow drains throughout the house, especially when the tank was recently pumped
  • Wet or soggy ground above the drain field when it has not rained
  • Grass or weeds growing noticeably taller and greener over the field area
  • Sewage smell outdoors near the field
  • Sewage backing up into floor drains or the lowest fixtures in the house

Can a damaged drain field be repaired?

Sometimes. It depends on the cause and how far it has gone.

If the damage is from solids overflow, a tank pump-out and a rest period sometimes allows the soil to recover partial absorption capacity. If the pipes are crushed from compaction or root damage, sections can sometimes be replaced. If the soil is saturated and structurally gone, a new field may be necessary.
