That alarm light came on. Or the buzzer started going. Either way, you are outside staring at the aerobic septic control panel wondering what changed and whether it is a same-day emergency or a five-minute fix.
Most of the time, it is not a disaster. But some alerts do need same-day attention. Knowing the difference keeps a repair from turning into a replacement. Here is how to read what your system is telling you.
How an aerobic system works, the short version
Aerobic septic systems treat wastewater using oxygen-loving bacteria instead of the anaerobic process in a conventional septic tank. An air pump runs continuously to push oxygen into the water. Bacteria do their work. The treated effluent gets disinfected with chlorine, then a spray pump sends it to spray heads in the yard during scheduled cycles.
More moving parts means more things that can trigger an alert. The alarm is not there to scare you. It is there to catch a small problem before it becomes a big one. First: silence the buzzer
Almost every aerobic system has a silencer button on the control panel. It is fine to silence the audible alarm while you figure out what is going on. Silencing the buzzer does not fix the problem and does not reset the system. The alert light stays on, which is what you want while you are diagnosing.
Do not hit a full reset button until you know why the alarm tripped. Resetting without fixing the root cause clears the flag and lets the problem keep running underneath.
The most common alerts and what they mean
High water level, the float alarm
This is the alert people see most often. Your system has a float switch in the aeration chamber that trips when the water level gets too high.
High water happens for a few reasons. Heavy use over a short period can temporarily push the level up, and it often comes back down on its own once normal use resumes. A clogged spray head or a broken distribution line can stop treated water from draining out fast enough. A failed spray pump means treated water is not leaving the tank at all.
What to check first: look at the spray heads in the yard during a scheduled spray cycle. Are they all spraying? Any that look clogged or broken? If the spray heads are working but water level is still high, the spray pump or the float sensor itself may be failing. That is a call-a-tech situation. If your household hosted a big gathering and used more water than usual, give the system four to six hours before assuming the worst.
Air pump failure
The air pump runs all the time. It pushes oxygen into the aeration chamber so the bacteria stay alive and keep treating wastewater. When the air pump stops, the bacteria start dying off.
Air pump alerts are common after power outages. The pump may have tripped a breaker or taken a surge hit. Check the breaker for the air pump circuit first. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, there is a deeper electrical issue. Do not keep resetting it.
If the breaker is fine, the air pump itself may have failed. These pumps wear out over time, especially in Texas heat. Air pump replacement is a routine repair, but it needs to happen quickly. Without air, treatment stops and the system starts drifting toward failure.
Spray pump failure
The spray pump moves treated water from the last chamber to the spray heads. No spray pump means treated water builds up in the tank instead of dispersing. The high-water float alarm usually follows close behind.
If the spray heads are dead and the air pump is still running, this is likely the spray pump. Check the breaker first. If the breaker is fine, the pump motor or the float switch controlling it may have failed. Working inside the electrical panel of an aerobic system without the right tools is not a homeowner repair. Call someone licensed.
Low chlorine
Aerobic systems use chlorine to disinfect treated effluent before it sprays out. Most systems use a chlorinator tube loaded with chlorine tablets. When the tablets run low or run out, the sensor trips an alert.
This is often the simplest fix. Open the chlorinator tube, usually a white PVC standpipe near the control panel, check whether the tablets are low or gone, and add the correct tablets. Your system documentation tells you which tablet type and size to use. Using the wrong tablets can damage the system, so confirm before you add anything.
Power or timer fault
Some alerts point to a control board issue, a timer that has lost its schedule, or a wiring fault. These show up as codes on digital panels or as amber and flashing lights on older systems. Power surges are a common cause, especially during Texas thunderstorm season.
If you had a power outage or surge recently and the system was working fine before, check all the breakers and confirm power to the panel, then consult your manual for the restart sequence for your specific unit. If the panel shows fault codes you cannot interpret, write them down and call.
Urgent versus can wait
Call right away: raw sewage backing up inside the house, strong persistent sewage odors in the yard, spray heads shooting raw-looking water, or any alert that started during or after a known system failure. Call or text 979-320-4940 and see how emergency service works.
Call same day: air pump failure, spray pump failure, high water level that is not going down after four to six hours of normal use, and any alert you cannot diagnose in fifteen minutes.
Usually wait until business hours: low chlorine with tablets on hand, a timer or control board fault with no backup inside the house, and a float alarm right after a heavy-use event that is trending back down.

What not to do
- Do not pour bleach directly into the system. You will kill the bacteria doing the treating, and recovery takes days to weeks.
- Do not keep resetting a tripped breaker. One reset is worth trying. Repeated trips mean something is drawing too much current or is shorted.
- Do not assume you have to stop using water entirely. For most alerts you can continue normal use while you arrange a service call, unless there is actual sewage backup inside the house.
- Do not ignore the alert for days. Aerobic systems have alarms because they need more active care than conventional septic. An ignored alert turns a repair into a replacement.
Why maintenance contracts matter
TCEQ says homeowners may perform maintenance on certain aerobic systems two years after initial installation, but local permitting authorities can require training or continued licensed maintenance.
