Sudden brown water from a private well is a different problem than gradual iron staining that creeps up on you over months. If your water has been turning fixtures orange or leaving rust rings for a long time, that's a chronic iron condition, and we covered it in our iron and iron bacteria in Texas well water. If the water was clear and turned brown in the last day or two without any obvious change on your end, that's what this piece is about. It usually has a specific cause, and tracking it down is faster than you'd expect.
Something Disturbed the Well or the System Recently
The most common reason for sudden discoloration is that something physically changed in the well or the water system recently. Work on the pump, a pipe connection, or anything inside the casing can disturb settled sediment and formation material that was sitting quietly at the bottom of the well. Once stirred, that material works its way into the water column and comes out your tap.
If a pump was recently replaced or serviced, that's the first place to look. Pulling a submersible pump out of a well and lowering a new one down is a real disturbance. Sediment that settled over years gets kicked up. Water may run brown, then clear, then brown again over a day or two as the disturbed material works its way out. This usually resolves on its own. Run water from an outside tap for thirty to sixty minutes to clear the line, and repeat over the next day. Don't run discolored water through your appliances, ice maker, or water softener while you flush.

Well Screen Failure
The screen at the bottom of the well casing lets water flow in from the surrounding formation while keeping sand and fine particles out. When a screen corrodes, cracks, or shifts position, that barrier disappears. Formation material, sand, silt, and particles from the water-bearing layer start entering the well freely. The result can be sudden brown or sandy water that doesn't clear no matter how long you run the tap.
Screen failure feels different from post-service disturbance. Disturbance from a service call clears over a day or two because the source of sediment is finite. A failed screen keeps producing discolored, gritty water because the pathway into the well is still open. If the water stays brown or sandy beyond a day of heavy flushing, screen failure is worth investigating. Corroded Pipe Inside the Casing
Steel pipe inside the well casing, the drop pipe that carries water up from the pump, corrodes over time. If a section of corroded pipe scale breaks loose, you get a burst of reddish-brown water. It may clear after running several gallons. Or it may keep releasing particles as corrosion continues.
The color is a clue here. Reddish-brown without much grit points toward iron corrosion from the pipe more than formation sediment. If the water also leaves rust-colored staining in a white sink or toilet bowl that wasn't there before, and if the discoloration appeared suddenly rather than building up gradually, corrosion from internal pipe failure is a likely cause. Water Table Dropped Below the Pump Intake
When the water table drops low enough during a dry stretch, the pump intake can drop below the clear water zone and start pulling from the turbid layer near the bottom of the well. The sediment that settled there over years gets drawn into the water column. The result is brown, cloudy water that worsens with heavy use as the well draws down faster than it recovers.

Temporary steps include reducing water use so the well can recover. A longer-term fix may be repositioning the pump higher in the casing, or deepening the well to reach a more stable water zone.
Rain or Surface Water Infiltrating the Wellhead
A wellhead that isn't properly sealed, or a well cap that's cracked or missing, can let surface water flow in after heavy rain. Surface water carries soil, organic matter, and whatever ran across the ground above the well, and it goes directly into the water column. This shows up as brown or muddy water after a significant rain event.
Surface infiltration is one of the more serious well problems because it carries bacteria and pathogens into the water supply alongside the sediment. If brown water arrived right after a hard rain and your well is older or has a questionable cap, run a bacteria test before you drink from it. What to Do Right Now
If your water turned brown overnight, here's the short version of what to do while you figure out the cause.
Don't drink it. Not until you know what you have. Use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
Run an outside tap for thirty to sixty minutes. This flushes the line without pushing discolored water through your fixtures, appliances, and water softener. Watch whether the water clears.
If it clears and stays clear, watch it over the next day. If it was service-related disturbance, it won't come back. If it clears and comes back, the source is still active.
Run a bacteria test. Brown water, especially after rain or if the wellhead seal is questionable, can carry bacteria. A basic coliform test is fast and inexpensive. Don't skip it.

We Test Before We Quote
When we get a call about sudden brown water, we don't start by pricing a new well. We start by asking what changed, when it started, and what the water looks like now. Then we check pump output, water quality, and if the cause isn't clear, we run a camera inspection inside the casing. Most causes of sudden discoloration have a targeted fix: screen repair, pump repositioning, pipe work, or improved sealing at the wellhead. None of those require drilling a new hole.
Most well companies will tell you the well is done when the water looks wrong. We test first and fix what's actually broken.
