What a constantly running pump is telling you

A private well system is supposed to build pressure, reach its shutoff setting, and stop the pump. When that doesn't happen, water is either leaving the system faster than it should, pressure is not being measured correctly, or the pump cannot produce the pressure the system needs.

The sound may be a steady motor hum near the pressure tank, a pump that starts and stops repeatedly, or a pump that runs after every faucet is closed. Each pattern gives a technician a useful clue, but the sound alone cannot identify the failed part. A pressure gauge reading, electrical check, and pump-output test may all be needed.

Common reasons a well pump won't shut off

A faucet, toilet, or outdoor line is still using water

Start with the easy check. Close every faucet, shower, hose bib, and appliance that uses water. Check toilets for a running valve and look for water flowing from an irrigation line, stock tank fill, or softener drain. If the pump stops after a fixture is repaired or a valve is closed, the well system may have been responding to a demand rather than failing. If it keeps running with all known water use stopped, the next step is a pressure and leak diagnosis.

There is a leak between the pressure tank and the house

A leak can be inside the house, under a slab, in a buried service line, or near an outdoor connection. A small leak may keep the pump running while producing very little visible water. A larger break can cause muddy areas, erosion, a flooded valve box, or a sudden drop in household pressure.

Do not dig blindly or keep resetting the breaker. Shut off the pump power if water is escaping and have the system checked. Finding the leak can protect the pump and may be less work than replacing equipment that was still serviceable.

The pressure switch is dirty, damaged, or set incorrectly

The pressure switch tells the pump when to start and stop. Contacts can wear, and insects or moisture can affect the switch enclosure. A switch that does not register the pressure correctly may keep calling for the pump after the system has reached its normal pressure.

Electrical parts should be handled by someone qualified to work on the equipment. Do not remove the switch cover while power is on. A technician can compare the gauge reading with the switch operation and determine whether the switch is the problem or only showing a deeper pressure issue.

The pressure tank has lost its air charge

A pressure tank helps the system maintain usable pressure between pump cycles. If the tank is waterlogged or its internal bladder has failed, the pump can cycle rapidly, run longer than expected, or behave erratically. The tank may also have a problem at the valve, fitting, or connection.

This is different from a pump that runs steadily because of a major water loss, but the symptoms can overlap. Testing the tank requires shutting down the system and checking pressure under the correct conditions. A gauge reading by itself does not prove the tank is good.

The pump cannot build enough pressure

A worn pump, damaged drop pipe, electrical problem, low water level, or restricted intake can keep the pump from reaching shutoff pressure. The motor may continue running while the house receives weak flow. In some cases, the system is drawing water faster than the well can deliver at that moment.

That does not automatically mean the well must be replaced. The correct diagnosis depends on pump output, static and operating water levels, the pressure reading, the condition of the piping, and the history of the system. What you can safely check before calling

You can collect useful information without opening electrical covers or changing pressure settings.

Listen for whether the pump runs steadily or cycles on and off.

Check that all indoor and outdoor fixtures are closed.

Look for visible leaks, wet ground, or water moving through a drain.

Read the pressure gauge if one is installed, and note whether the number rises, falls, or stays still.

Check whether the problem affects every fixture or only one part of the property.

Write down when the problem began and whether it followed construction, a storm, a power interruption, or a change in water use.

If the pump motor is hot, smells burned, trips a breaker, or runs with no water available, turn off its power and leave the repair to a qualified professional. Repeatedly restoring power can damage the motor or create an electrical hazard.

What a proper diagnosis should include

A useful service visit should connect the symptom to a tested cause. Depending on the system, that can include checking pressure at the tank, testing the pressure switch, inspecting accessible valves and fittings, checking the tank, measuring pump performance, and looking for a leak on the property side of the system.

Water quality can matter too. Sediment, iron, or other water conditions may affect fixtures and treatment equipment, but a water treatment issue and a pump-pressure issue are not the same repair. If you also see discoloration or a new odor, ask for water testing rather than guessing at a filter. When a replacement may be necessary

Replacement becomes a reasonable conversation when testing shows that a component is worn out, damaged, or no longer able to meet the property's demand. That could mean a pressure switch, tank, line, pump, or another part of the water system. A whole new well is a much larger decision and should be based on the well's condition and production, not on the fact that one pump is running.

Ask what was tested, what the test showed, and which repair would restore the system. You should also know whether the recommendation concerns the pump equipment, the well construction, the buried water line, or the home's plumbing. Those are different problems with different remedies.

Get the pump diagnosed before you replace the system

A pump that won't shut off is a warning to stop and test, not a reason to sign a replacement contract on the spot. Turn off power when the equipment is overheating or losing water, protect the home from leaks, and call for an on-site evaluation.
