There is no universal answer. The right call depends on what is actually going on underground, and the only way to know that is to test and inspect before you decide. We diagnose before we quote. That is how we work on every call, and it applies here too.
What well deepening actually means
Deepening an existing well means drilling further through the existing borehole to reach a lower water-bearing zone. The driller goes back into the same hole, advances past the original depth, and looks for water at the new depth. If water is there and the formation will yield it, the well is extended and the pump is re-set at the new depth.
It sounds like the cheaper, less disruptive option. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is not.
When deepening can work
Deepening has the best chance of success when a few things line up.
The existing casing is in good condition. If the casing is straight, solid, and not corroded or cracked, a driller can work through it. If the casing is failing, deepening does not address that problem. You would be drilling through a collapsing structure.
There is productive water below the current depth. This depends on the geology of your specific area. In some formations, going deeper finds more water. In others, you go deeper and find nothing, or find water of worse quality. A driller who knows the local geology and has logs from nearby wells can tell you whether the formation supports it.
The borehole diameter allows it. If the original drilling crew used a borehole size that allows for a deepening run with a smaller bit, it is possible. Not every well configuration allows that.
The problem is yield or water level, not casing failure or contamination. If the well is losing yield because the water table has dropped and a deeper zone holds more water, deepening addresses the actual cause. If the problem is a failed pump, a clogged intake screen, or a broken casing, deepening does nothing for it.
When deepening will not solve it
Deepening is not the answer when any of the following are true.
The casing is cracked, corroded, or caving. Drilling through a failing casing is dangerous and often impossible. A new well is the only real fix.
The formation at depth does not hold productive water. Some Texas aquifer zones thin out or become saline at depth. Drilling deeper into salt water or rock that yields nothing wastes money on a gamble that the geology already answered.
The problem is not depth. If your pump is failing, your pressure tank is waterlogged, or your pump intake screen is clogged, none of that changes with a deeper well. We test these first so you are not solving the wrong problem.
The well is old enough that all the components are due for replacement anyway. If you have a well with original casing and a pump on borrowed time, a deepening job that saves the old casing may delay an inevitable replacement by a few years at best. Sometimes a new well is the cleaner answer for the long run.
The diagnosis comes before any decision
This is where we start. Before anyone talks about deepening or drilling, we want to know what the well is actually doing.
We check pump output. We test pressure. We look at how the pressure tank is performing. We check the static water level in the well to see how far it has dropped compared to where it should be. We look at the yield: how many gallons per minute the well is producing versus how many your property needs.
Most of the time, a well that seems to need deepening turns out to have a different problem. The pump is undersized for the load. The pressure tank has lost its charge. The pump intake is partially blocked. A pressure switch is failing. These are fixable parts. They cost a fraction of what a deepening job or a new well costs.

The driller's log: your best starting point
If you have the original driller's log for your well, it tells you the geology the crew encountered when the well was first put in. It shows depths, formations, water zones, and yield information from the original drill. That document is the starting point for evaluating whether deepening makes sense for your specific well.

Cost: why it is hard to give a number up front
Both deepening and drilling a new well have variable costs. The depth required, the geology, the equipment needed, and what the driller finds underground all affect the final price.
In general, deepening a well that is a good candidate costs less than drilling a new well to the same total depth. But a deepening job on a well that is not a good candidate... bad casing, wrong geology, wrong problem... can cost real money without fixing anything. That is the risk of deciding before diagnosing.
