This comes up more often than people expect. There are practical options. Here's how to plan for it before construction starts, because scrambling for water in the middle of a build is harder than sorting it out in advance.

Why the Well Isn't Always Ready on Day One

In a good build sequence, the well gets drilled early, before the slab goes in and before crews are on site every day. Several things can push that timing out.

Permitting takes time. Well drilling in Texas requires a TDLR license and, depending on your county, the groundwater conservation district may have its own permit process that adds weeks to the timeline. Site conditions can delay rig access. If the land needs clearing, grading, or a driveway cut before a drill rig can reach the well location, the well may need to wait until that work is done. A drill rig is large equipment and needs solid, clear access to set up safely.

Sometimes buyers close on land without a firm build plan yet. The land purchase happens, but the design process takes months before anyone knows where the house will sit, which means the well location isn't locked in either.

Hauled Water: The Most Common Solution

Water haulers deliver potable or non-potable water by truck to a storage tank on your property. In most rural Texas areas, finding a hauler for agricultural or construction water isn't difficult. Potable water, water safe for drinking and cooking, is a different product and needs to be sourced specifically if people will be consuming it on site.

For construction work, including concrete pours, equipment cleaning, and site cleanup, non-potable hauled water is typically fine. Talk to your builder about how much they actually need day-to-day so you can size the storage right and schedule deliveries to match the work pace.

Temporary On-Site Storage

A poly storage tank on site holds the hauled water between deliveries. This keeps crews working without waiting on a truck. The tank needs to sit somewhere accessible for refill deliveries and close enough to where the work is happening to be practical. Common sizes for construction purposes run from several hundred gallons to a few thousand, depending on what your build demands.

When the well is complete and tested, the temporary tank can be repurposed for long-term water storage or removed. Rural Water Supply Corporations

Some rural areas in our 8-county footprint are served by rural water supply corporations, which are co-op style utilities that run water lines to rural properties. If there's a WSC line near your land, a temporary or permanent connection may be an option. This isn't available everywhere, and the costs and timelines vary. Start the Well Planning Process Early

The single most useful thing you can do for the water gap is to start the well planning process well before construction begins. That means scheduling the on-site visit early, getting the permit process moving, and locking in the well location before any structures or utilities go in that can't be moved.

One mistake we see on rural builds: the house goes up first, then someone realizes the ideal well location is now under or too close to the slab, the septic drain field, or a fence line. Well placement decisions are much easier to make in the planning phase than after the build is underway. What Not to Use for Construction Water

A few approaches that come up and are worth avoiding:

Don't use surface water, from ponds, tanks, or drainage, without treatment for any purpose where people will be exposed to it. Construction crews use water for tasks that can result in incidental exposure, and untreated surface water can carry bacteria and parasites.

Don't assume an old well on the property is safe without testing it first. An abandoned or unused well can have a compromised casing, a failed seal, or years of bacterial growth in standing water. Don't underestimate how much water construction actually uses. Concrete work, equipment cleanup, and general crew needs can move through several hundred gallons on an active day. Size the storage and the hauler schedule to match the build pace.
