Why Some Lots Cannot Support a Standard Drain Field
A conventional septic system works by flowing partially treated effluent from the septic tank into an underground drain field, where the soil filters and finishes the treatment before the water reaches groundwater. That process only works when the soil has enough depth, the right permeability, and a low enough water table to give the effluent somewhere to go before hitting a layer it cannot pass through.
Three conditions most commonly push a lot toward a mound system in our area:
High water table. If the seasonal high-water table sits too close to the surface, a conventional drain field cannot maintain the required separation between the effluent and groundwater. State rules set those minimum distances, and they exist because water that reaches the water table before it's fully treated can affect wells and surface water nearby.
Dense clay soil. Clay does not absorb water quickly. A drain field in heavy clay can saturate and stop functioning instead of treating effluent the way the design intended. Shallow soil over rock or hardpan. If bedrock or a restrictive soil layer sits too close to the surface, there's not enough depth to treat the effluent before it reaches that layer. The system needs more separation than the lot naturally provides.

How a Raised Mound System Works
A mound system builds the drain field up instead of sinking it down. Here is the basic flow:
Wastewater leaves the house and enters the septic tank, same as any system. In the tank, solids settle and the liquid is partially treated. The treated liquid, called effluent, then moves to a pump tank. A pump in that second tank pushes the effluent through a pressurized force main up to the mound, an elevated bed of engineered fill material placed on top of the native soil.
Inside the mound, the effluent distributes through a network of perforated pipes and filters through the fill material and then through the native soil below it. That two-layer treatment, fill plus native soil, gives the system the separation and treatment capacity it needs even when the natural ground conditions cannot supply it on their own.
The pump does not run continuously. It doses the mound in timed intervals, which keeps the mound from becoming saturated while making sure treatment stays active. The dose schedule is set based on the household's typical water use and the mound's design capacity.
TCEQ Requirements and Permitting
In Texas, on-site sewage facilities are regulated by TCEQ. The state requires that anyone installing, altering, or extending an on-site sewage system hold a TCEQ license. What Installation Looks Like
Installing a mound system is a larger operation than a conventional septic install. The project involves preparing the native soil surface where the mound will sit, importing and placing engineered fill material to the specified depth and dimensions, setting the distribution pipes inside the mound to TCEQ specifications, installing the pump tank and connecting the force main, backfilling and seeding or sodding the mound surface to prevent erosion, and having the finished installation inspected before the system goes into service.
The mound is visible above grade. It typically rises a few feet above the surrounding ground depending on the design, and it's usually the most noticeable part of the system from the surface. The pump tank is the piece that differs from a conventional system. The pump and its float controls need periodic inspection to confirm dosing is happening on schedule and the alarm circuit is functional. The pump will eventually need replacement, as submersible pumps do, but with proper maintenance it can serve the system for many years. If the pump alarm activates, it means the system isn't dosing the way it should, and that needs prompt attention before the mound accumulates an overload it wasn't designed to handle.
The mound surface should stay clear of heavy traffic and large shrubs or trees. Root intrusion can damage the distribution pipes inside the mound, and heavy equipment can compact the fill material in ways that affect how the system drains. Warning signs show up the same way they do with any septic system: slow drains inside the house, wet or soft spots over the mound area, odors around the system, or a pump alarm that keeps tripping. Catching those early usually means a repair. Waiting until the system has backed up into the house means a much larger project. Mound systems cost more than conventional drain fields.
