The well casing is the pipe that lines the borehole from the surface down to the water-bearing layer. It does two jobs: it keeps the hole from collapsing, and it seals out surface water and shallow contamination. When the casing fails, those jobs stop getting done. Surface water, bacteria, or other contaminants can get into the well, and you will not necessarily know it happened right away. The water might look and taste fine for a while. The problem is happening underground where you cannot see it.

Casing problems are one of the things we check when a well's performance or water quality changes unexpectedly. We test before we replace, and casing is no exception. Here is what casing damage looks like, what causes it, and why it matters.

What the Well Casing Actually Does

When a well is drilled, the bore goes through multiple soil and rock layers before reaching the water-bearing zone. Those upper layers are not all solid. They include loose soil, clay, and shallow water that is not the clean water you want in your home. The casing is the pipe that runs from the surface down into the well, and it serves as a barrier between the well and those upper layers.

The grout seal around the outside of the casing near the surface is the other half of this protection. It fills the space between the casing and the borehole wall, preventing surface water, runoff, and shallow contaminated water from running down alongside the pipe and into the well. Both the casing and the grout seal have to be intact for the well to stay protected. A crack in the casing or a failed grout seal creates an entry point for contamination. A deep, clean well can be compromised by a failure that happens right at the surface.

Warning Signs That a Casing May Be Compromised

Water Quality That Changes After Heavy Rain or Flooding

This is one of the most reliable tells. If your well water changes in color, taste, or smell within a day or two of significant rainfall or flooding, that is surface water getting in. A sound casing with a solid grout seal keeps surface water out regardless of weather. When water quality shifts with the weather pattern, something is letting surface water reach the well. A cracked casing or failed grout seal is a common cause.

This is also one of the main reasons we put together our your well after a flood or heavy rain. Testing after any significant flooding event in our footprint is not optional. It is how you find out what got in before you drink it.

Sediment and Debris in the Water

A sudden increase in sand, sediment, or fine material in the water, especially after a weather event, can point to a casing breach that is letting surrounding soil migrate in. This is different from the deeper sediment issues that come from aquifer conditions or a screen problem at the bottom of the well. We covered those causes in our sediment in your well water. When sediment appears suddenly after a storm, the casing is part of the investigation.

Coliform Bacteria in a Water Test

Coliform bacteria in a well water test can have several causes, but a casing breach or failed grout seal is one of them. Surface water and shallow groundwater carry bacteria that the deep aquifer typically does not. When coliform shows up in a well that previously tested clean, especially after heavy rain, it is worth having the casing inspected as part of figuring out why. Visible Rust, Corrosion, or Damage at the Wellhead

Steel casings corrode. In some water chemistries and soil types, they corrode faster than in others. Visible rust staining or physical damage at the wellhead, the section of casing that sticks up above ground, is a sign that corrosion may have progressed below the surface as well. The part you can see is the easiest to inspect. If it looks corroded or damaged at the top, the section underground deserves attention.

A Drop in Well Production Without a Clear Cause

A casing problem does not always show up as contamination. Sometimes it causes a partial collapse or cave-in that restricts the well's output. If your well is pumping less water than it used to and the pump, pressure tank, and water level readings do not explain it, the casing is part of the diagnostic work.

What Causes Well Casing to Fail

Age and Material

Steel casing corrodes over time, particularly in water or soil with certain chemical characteristics. Most steel casings do not last forever, and a well that has been in the ground for several decades may have casing that is at or past its expected life. PVC casing does not corrode the same way, which is one reason it is commonly used in new well installations. Freeze Damage

In a hard freeze, water in the soil around the casing expands. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles stress the upper portion of the casing and the grout seal at the surface. Most rural Texas wells do not face severe freeze damage regularly, but a hard freeze like the ones our region has seen in recent years can crack older or already-weakened casings and damage the grout seal at ground level.

Ground Movement and Soil Shifting

Soil shifting, drought-driven subsidence, and settling can stress or shear a casing. This is less common than age-related corrosion, but it happens, particularly in areas with clay-heavy soils that expand and contract significantly as they wet and dry through the seasons.

Problems from the Original Construction

A grout seal that was never applied correctly, or a casing that was not set deep enough, creates vulnerability from the start. Some of the casing problems we find in older wells trace back to the original installation, not to wear over time. This is one more reason why who drills your well matters as much as the drilling itself.

Can a Damaged Casing Be Repaired?

Sometimes, yes. Minor damage near the top of the casing can sometimes be addressed without replacing the whole pipe. A failed or deteriorated grout seal can be rebuilt in some situations. The answer depends on what the inspection finds, how deep the damage is, and what the well is showing us about water quality and production. We use a camera inspection to see what is happening below the surface before we tell you what your options are.

When the casing is severely corroded, collapsed, or breached in a way that cannot be reliably repaired, drilling a new well is the honest answer. We say that clearly and we explain why, the same way we approach any diagnosis. We test before we replace, and casing is no different. If a repair holds, that is what we recommend. If the well is past that point, we will tell you so and walk you through what comes next.
