What the casing actually does

PVC casing: where it shines
PVC is plastic pipe, and on a lot of coastal Texas ground it is a strong fit. Here is the big one: it does not rust. Our water out here often runs high in iron, salt, and minerals, and that chemistry eats metal over time. PVC does not care. It will not corrode, it will not flake rust into your water, and it will not pit from the inside out the way some metal does. For a shallower well in sandy or soft ground with aggressive water, that corrosion resistance is hard to beat.
PVC is also lighter and easier to handle, which usually keeps the install cost down. It is smooth on the inside, so water moves through it well. And because it is chemically inert, it does not add a metallic taste or color to your water.
The trade-off is strength. PVC is not as tough as steel under load. In deep wells, or in ground that shifts and squeezes, or where heavy rock and pressure come into play, PVC can be the wrong call. It can crack or deform if it is pushed past what it is rated for. Quality matters too. There is thin PVC and there is heavy-wall PVC built for wells, and they are not the same product. We do not cut corners on that.
Steel casing: where it earns its keep
Steel is the old workhorse, and it is still the right answer in plenty of situations. Its strength is the whole point. When you are going deep, drilling through rock, or dealing with ground that wants to collapse or squeeze the pipe, steel takes the load that would crack plastic. It handles heat and pressure better, and it gives you a rigid, dependable column all the way down.
The honest weakness is corrosion. In high-iron, high-salt, mineral-heavy water, which we see a lot of across the eight counties we serve, steel can rust and degrade over the years. Galvanized and coated steel push that timeline out, but no metal is truly immune to aggressive water chemistry. When steel corrodes, you can get rust in your water and weak spots in the casing wall. If you are already seeing rust-colored water from an older well, read the signs of a damaged casing before you assume it is a treatment problem. Steel also tends to cost more up front and is heavier to set, which can add to the install.
The Gulf Coast wrinkle: your water is the deciding factor
Here is what a lot of comparisons leave out. The same material that lasts a long time on one property can be the wrong choice a mile down the road. Coastal Texas ground changes fast. One tract is sandy and shallow with corrosive water. The next has rock, depth, and pressure that demand real structural strength. If the water is not right, nothing else on the land works, and the casing material plays a real part in keeping that water clean and dependable.

Both can last a very long time when they are matched to the right conditions. PVC tends to outlast steel where corrosive water is the main threat and the well is not deep or under heavy structural load. Steel tends to outlast PVC where depth, rock, and ground pressure are the main threats and water chemistry is gentler. Push either material into the conditions it is weak at, and it will fail early. That is the real story behind longevity. It is not which material is better. It is which material fits your ground.
