If you have an aerobic septic system, there's a part of it that sits in your yard, gets hit by lawn mowers, clogs with mineral buildup, and never gets thought about until it stops working. Those are your spray heads. For most Texas aerobic system owners, out of sight means out of mind, until the alarm goes off or you see soggy patches in your yard where there shouldn't be any.

Spray head maintenance is easy to do when you know to look, and easy to ignore until it causes a bigger problem. This covers what spray heads do, what makes them fail, what you can check yourself, and when to call for help.
How Spray Heads Work in a Texas Aerobic System
An aerobic septic system treats wastewater by pumping air into the tank, which feeds bacteria that break down waste much faster than a conventional system. The treated effluent, the liquid after treatment, gets pumped out of the tank to a disinfection chamber, mixed with chlorine, and then pumped out to a spray field around the yard.
The spray heads are the delivery mechanism. They pop up when the pump runs, scatter the treated effluent over a designated area, and drop back down when the cycle ends. TCEQ rules require this spray zone to stay away from property lines, water features, driveways, and anywhere people walk regularly. In Texas, aerobic spray systems must run on a timer or automated cycle, and the heads have to cover the spray area without puddling or running off the property.
When the heads work right, the system runs quietly on its cycle, the effluent soaks into the yard, and you barely notice it. When one head fails, the zone it covers gets underwatered, untreated waste backs up, and your system can fall out of TCEQ compliance. Common Signs of Clogged or Damaged Spray Heads
You don't need a technician to spot these. Walk your spray field the next time the system cycles and look for:
A head that doesn't pop up at all. If a head stays flat when the pump is running, it's either clogged solid, physically damaged, or the line feeding it has an obstruction. A stuck head means that section of your yard isn't getting coverage.
Uneven spray pattern. Spray heads are designed to throw water in a consistent arc. If you see one throwing a narrow stream, one side heavier than the other, or dribbling instead of spraying, the nozzle orifice is partially clogged. Mineral deposits, biofilm, and small debris are the usual causes.
Puddles or standing water near a head. If treated water is pooling instead of spraying out and absorbing, the head may be spraying straight down, the ground may be saturated, or a riser has a crack letting water seep below the surface. Standing effluent is a health concern and a TCEQ compliance issue.
Broken or missing heads. Spray heads are durable, but they sit right at ground level and take hits from mowers, foot traffic, and vehicles. A sheared-off head is obvious. A cracked body may not be visible from above but will spray sideways or leak from the base.
Soggy yard in unexpected places. Wet patches that don't match where the spray heads should reach can mean an underground line leak, a redirected head, or a cracked distribution line feeding the spray field.
Why Spray Heads Clog
The effluent coming out of an aerobic system is treated and disinfected, but it still carries minerals, trace organics, and biological material. Over time, these leave deposits inside the small nozzle openings. Hard water from wells, which is common across our footprint, speeds this up. Iron and calcium build up in the orifice and eventually restrict or block the flow entirely.
Biofilm is the other common culprit. Even treated effluent supports some microbial growth, and the inside of a spray head nozzle is a small, damp tube that collects it. Without periodic cleaning, biofilm thickens until it blocks the spray.
Physical debris, including grass clippings, soil, and insects, can get into heads that have damaged caps or that don't seat properly after being bumped. An open head invites blockage.
What You Can Clean Yourself
Spray heads on most Texas aerobic systems are designed to unscrew from the riser for cleaning. Before you do anything, turn off power to the spray pump or put the system in manual-off mode. You don't want a spray cycle to start while you're holding a riser.
Unscrew the head from the riser body. The nozzle is usually a small removable insert inside the head. Pull it out and rinse it under clean water. If it's visibly clogged, soak it in white vinegar for 30 minutes and rinse again. A toothpick or small soft brush can clear the orifice opening without damaging it.
Don't use metal probes or drill bits to clear a blocked nozzle. You'll enlarge the opening, change the spray pattern, and create a new problem. If vinegar soaking and a soft brush won't clear it, replace the nozzle insert. When you reinstall the head, make sure it seats flat and the cap or screen on top is intact. Cracked caps let in debris and accelerate the next clog cycle.
When to Call a Professional
Some spray head problems aren't DIY territory.
If heads are broken at the riser or base, the riser itself may need to be replaced. If underground distribution lines have a leak, you need equipment to locate and excavate the break. If the pump is cycling more than usual or the timer isn't triggering the spray zone, the control panel and float switches should be checked by a licensed OSSF technician.
TCEQ says homeowners may perform maintenance on certain aerobic systems two years after initial installation, but local permitting authorities can require training or continued licensed maintenance. Check the permit and local authority before assuming the schedule. That contract should include an annual inspection covering your spray heads along with the tank compartments, air compressor, chlorinator, and spray pump. How Often to Check
A visual inspection every 60 to 90 days keeps small issues from becoming compliance violations. Turn on the spray cycle manually or wait for a scheduled cycle, then walk the field. Look for missing heads, uneven spray, puddles, and soggy ground. It takes five minutes.
Do a more thorough nozzle cleaning once a year, or any time you notice a change in the spray pattern.
