Why Aerobic Systems Use Chlorine
Aerobic septic systems treat wastewater through an oxygen-driven bacterial process that breaks down solids more thoroughly than a conventional system. The treated effluent is clear enough to be surface-sprayed or drip-dispersed around your property. Before that effluent reaches the spray heads or drip zone, it passes through one more step: chlorination.
Tablet or liquid chlorine is added to kill any remaining pathogens in the treated water before it contacts the ground surface. Without that step, spraying partially treated effluent creates a health risk for anyone who walks through the spray area. TCEQ says homeowners may perform maintenance on certain aerobic systems two years after initial installation, but local permitting authorities can require training or continued licensed maintenance. What Tablets to Use
The tablets used in septic chlorinators are not the same as swimming pool tablets, even though both use calcium hypochlorite as the active ingredient. Pool tablets come in sizes and chemical formulations designed for large volumes of water and are often combined with algaecides, stabilizers, or other additives that should not enter a septic system.
Use tablets specifically labeled for aerobic septic systems. They are typically 1-inch calcium hypochlorite tablets without additives, sized to fit your chlorinator canister. The wrong type can damage the canister, underdose the effluent, or introduce chemicals that disrupt the aerobic bacteria earlier in the treatment process. Your maintenance provider can tell you the correct tablet size for your specific system. When in doubt, ask before you buy a generic product at a hardware store.
How to Check the Chlorine Canister Yourself
The chlorine canister on an aerobic system sits in-line between the pump chamber and the spray heads or drip distribution zone. On most residential systems it looks like a white or gray PVC canister, roughly 12 to 18 inches tall, with an inlet at the bottom and an outlet near the top.
A simple check takes two minutes. Open the lid (most twist off or have a simple latch). Look inside. If the canister is empty or you can see only a sludge of dissolved residue at the bottom with no tablets remaining, it needs to be refilled. If tablets are present but reduced to small fragments, they will run out before your next maintenance visit. Note any heavy white or gray scale buildup inside the canister. Scale can slow the flow of effluent through the tablets and reduce how much chlorine actually reaches the treated water.
Building this check into your monthly walk-around of the property takes almost no time. If you catch a low canister before it empties completely, you avoid the alarm and the service call.
How Often to Replace the Tablets
There is no fixed interval that works for every property. How fast tablets dissolve depends on the number of people using water in the household, the water temperature (warmer conditions speed dissolution), the tablet size, and the specific canister design on your system.
As a general guideline for a household of two to four people, most canisters need to be topped off every four to eight weeks. A larger household or a system under heavier use might need a refill every three to four weeks. Colder months typically slow dissolution and extend the interval.
The practical rule: check the canister when you walk the spray heads. If the tablets are at half capacity or less, add more. Do not wait for the canister to run completely empty. Running the system dry for even a few days means effluent is being sprayed or drip-distributed without chlorine treatment during that window.
The Low Chlorine Alarm
Many aerobic control panels have an alert for the chlorination step. Depending on your system, it might be labeled spray low, chlorine low, turbidity, or a basic indicator light on the panel. If that alarm trips, check the canister first. An empty or nearly empty canister is the most common cause by far.
Other reasons a chlorine-related alarm might fire include a clogged canister inlet slowing effluent flow through the tablets, a crack or break in the canister body that allows effluent to bypass the tablets entirely, or a failed pump that is not moving effluent through the system at the normal rate. How to Tell the Tablets Are Working
The clearest sign that chlorination is working correctly is the spray heads. If the system sprays at a normal pattern with no odor coming from the spray zone, the treated effluent is getting adequate chlorine contact. Most aerobic control panels do not have a real-time chlorine display for homeowners, but a licensed maintenance provider will test residual chlorine in the effluent during the inspection visit as part of the standard check. What Happens If the Canister Runs Out
A system that runs without chlorine for a day or two will not fail catastrophically. The aerobic bacteria that do the primary treatment work upstream of the chlorination step, so their colony is not affected by an empty canister. What changes is the treatment status of the effluent being dispersed.
