Most rural Texas landowners start with one well. A domestic well, properly permitted, drilled to a good aquifer, and designed to supply the house with clean drinking water. That well works fine for the house. The question that comes up later, once livestock is on the property or garden beds are expanding or hay fields need watering, is whether the domestic well can handle irrigation too, or whether a second, separate well makes more sense.

This is a real question with a real answer, and it is not the same answer for every property. Here is how to think it through honestly.
What Makes a Domestic Well Different from an Irrigation Well
A domestic well is designed to supply potable water: water safe for people to drink, cook with, and bathe in. It is permitted, constructed, and tested to meet Texas standards for drinking water wells. The pump and pressure tank are sized to the household's demand, which typically means a few gallons per minute for a standard home. The water is tested before the well is finished and periodically after.
An irrigation well does not have to meet potable standards. It is often permitted differently, drilled to shallower or different aquifers, and set up to move much larger volumes of water than a domestic well does. Irrigation demands are measured in gallons per minute at a rate that a domestic pump would burn itself out trying to match. A drip system for a small garden might be manageable on a domestic well. A sprinkler system for a hay field is not.
Water rights also differ. In Texas, domestic wells fall under what is called the domestic and livestock exemption from groundwater district regulation in many parts of the state. Irrigation wells are subject to different permitting depending on the county and the groundwater conservation district. If you are planning irrigation at any meaningful scale, it is worth understanding which rules apply in your area before you drill anything.
When the Domestic Well Can Handle It
A domestic well can support some supplemental irrigation, especially drip irrigation to a garden, watering livestock from a trough, or spot-watering trees and landscaping near the house. The key question is whether the well produces enough gallons per minute to satisfy both the house and the irrigation load at the same time, and whether the pressure tank and pump are sized for that combined demand.
If your well was drilled and designed for a household, running an irrigation system off it while people are showering and the dishwasher is running will drop your pressure and cycle your pump harder than it was designed to handle. Over time, that kind of overload shortens the pump's life. When a Second Well Makes Sense
A separate irrigation well makes sense when the volume of water you need for the land exceeds what a domestic well can supply, when you want to protect drinking water quality by keeping irrigation water separate, or when the irrigation demand is large enough to need its own pump and controls rather than sharing the domestic system.
For landowners running cattle, horses, or other livestock at any real scale, a livestock well often makes sense independent of the domestic well. Livestock water demand at volume is different enough that a well designed for it, with a solar pump or a larger pump system, saves wear on the domestic system without starving the house of pressure when both are running.
For any kind of field irrigation, hay, pasture, or row crops, the volume requirements almost always argue for a dedicated irrigation well. The pump sizing, the pipe diameter, and the well's target production rate are all different from what a domestic well does. You do not want one system carrying both jobs at maximum load.
Permitting and Setback Considerations
Any second well on the property needs to meet Texas permitting requirements and maintain proper setback from the septic system and any other contamination sources. The permit type depends on the intended use. A domestic well and an irrigation well are permitted separately in Texas, and the rules that govern them can differ based on your groundwater conservation district. Setbacks matter for both wells. Each well needs to stay a safe distance from the septic field, livestock pens, fuel storage, and other contamination sources. When a property has two wells, the placement of both has to be planned together so neither one ends up in a position that compromises the other. What to Ask Before You Add a Second Well
If you are thinking about whether the property needs a second well, here are the questions worth answering before you call a driller.
What is the actual volume demand of your planned irrigation or livestock operation? Get a real number. A drip garden is different from a hundred-head cattle operation, and the difference drives the whole conversation about what kind of well you need.
What does your current domestic well produce? If you do not know your well's current gallon-per-minute output, that is the first thing to find out. We can test that for you. A well that already produces well above your household demand may have room for some additional load. A well that is running at or near its capacity does not.
What aquifer is your domestic well drawing from, and is that the right aquifer for an irrigation well on your property? Different aquifers produce different water quality and different volumes. An irrigation well might draw from a different layer than the domestic well, which can be an advantage on properties where the deeper layer is more productive.
