When the time comes to put in a septic system, most landowners expect to pick a size. What they don't always expect is being asked to choose a material. Concrete or plastic. Both are approved in Texas. Both hold waste and work with standard drain field designs. The right one for your property depends on what's in your ground and how the site sits. Here's what you need to know before that conversation happens.
What Both Have in Common
Concrete and plastic (polyethylene) tanks serve the same purpose and work the same basic way. Wastewater flows from the house into the tank. Solids settle on the bottom, lighter material floats on top, and the clarified liquid in the middle flows out to the drain field. The tank is a holding and settling chamber. Treatment happens in the soil.
Both types are manufactured to meet state specs. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality sets requirements for tank integrity, inlet and outlet positioning, and access. A tank that's properly manufactured and installed does the job regardless of material. So why does material matter? Because the two types respond differently to soil conditions, water table, weight, and long-term wear. Out here, those differences show up.
The Case for Concrete
Concrete has been the default for rural Texas septic systems for a long time, and for good reason. It's heavy. A standard concrete tank can weigh several thousand pounds, which means it stays put. In areas with clay-heavy soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, that weight keeps the tank from shifting. In areas with a higher water table or where flooding is a possibility, that mass keeps the tank from floating up out of the ground when the soil gets saturated.
Floating is a real risk for lightweight tanks on certain sites. When the water table rises and saturated soil loses its grip on a buried structure, a plastic tank without contents can lift out of the ground or shift enough to break the inlet and outlet connections. A concrete tank doesn't float. On low-lying rural land near creek bottoms or flood-prone pasture, that matters.
Concrete tanks can also be repaired. Cracks, chips, and joint separation can often be patched with epoxy or grout injection. An older concrete tank that's structurally sound but showing wear can sometimes be repaired and kept in service for years rather than replaced entirely. That repairability is worth something when you're putting in a system that could serve the land for thirty or forty years.
The downsides are real too. Concrete can crack over time, especially in clay soil that expands and contracts through wet and dry seasons. Older concrete can deteriorate from hydrogen sulfide gases produced inside active septic tanks, particularly in slow-flow systems or warm climates, which describes most of our footprint. And the weight that makes concrete stable also makes it harder to install. Heavy equipment is required. That affects access logistics on some sites.
The Case for Plastic
Polyethylene tanks are lighter, they won't rust or corrode, and they handle the chemistry of wastewater without deteriorating the way older concrete sometimes does. They're sealed at the factory rather than assembled on site, which means the joints and seams are consistent from the start. For sites with good access and stable, well-drained soil, plastic installs faster and often at a lower upfront cost.
Plastic also tends to be the right call when site access is tight. If your property has narrow gates, soft ground, or trees that limit where heavy equipment can move, a plastic tank that can be set with lighter machinery is sometimes the practical answer.
The limitation is buoyancy. An empty or partially filled plastic tank in saturated soil is at risk of shifting or floating. Most installers manage this with concrete anchoring straps or by making sure the tank stays at least partially full during periods of high water table. On stable, well-drained ground it's not an issue. On flood-prone or low-lying land, it needs to be designed for carefully.
What Texas Gulf Coast Soil Usually Tells Us
Our 8-county footprint runs across some of the heaviest clay soil in the state. Expansive clay that cracks in summer and swells in winter. Low-lying pasture land that holds water long after a rain. Creek bottoms and flood plains that see high water table after heavy storms.
On most of the properties we work on out here, concrete is the right call. The weight keeps it stable through the soil movement and the wet seasons. The repairability is worth having on land that's going to be in the family for generations. We've seen plastic tanks shift on flooded parcels and concrete tanks hold firm through the same events. That track record matters when you're committing to a system the land will depend on for decades.
There are properties where plastic is the right answer, usually because access makes concrete impractical or because the site has sandy, well-drained soil and a consistently low water table. Who Makes the Call
The installer doesn't pick the tank in isolation. In Texas, the soil and site evaluation required for your septic permit tells us what the site can support. That evaluation looks at perc rate, soil type, depth to groundwater, and how well the site drains. Those findings shape the whole system design, including which tank material fits the conditions.
