When you got your well drilled, the house was the plan. Now you're building a barn, a shop, a hay storage shed with a wash station, or guest quarters out back, and you need water there too. Running a line from the existing well sounds like the obvious answer. It might be. But running the pipe is step four, not step one.

We get calls from rural Texas landowners who ran a line to their new barn, hooked it up, and now the house pressure drops every time someone opens a faucet out there. Or the pump is cycling so fast it's burning out early. The water is getting to the barn. But the system isn't handling it the way it should.
Before you call a plumber to run the pipe, let us look at the well first.
What your well's yield actually means
Every well produces at a certain rate, measured in gallons per minute. A well drilled for a two-person household was designed around that household's typical demand. Add an outbuilding with a wash station, a couple of hose bibs, and a trough for livestock, and you've added meaningful load to a system that may not have room for it.
The fix isn't always a new well. It's often a pump or pressure system adjustment, or a storage tank that buffers the demand. But we need to know what your well is actually producing before we make a recommendation. That means a pump test, not a guess. Production can change over time, and the only way to know where you stand today is to test it. Your pump and pressure tank may not be sized for two structures
Most residential well systems are sized for a single house. The pump, pressure tank, and pressure switch are all matched to each other and to the expected load. When you add a second structure, you're adding peak demand. If the barn and house both need water at the same time, the pump has to meet the combined load. A pump that was right for the house alone may cycle so frequently under the new load that it wears out faster than it should. The pressure tank matters too. A tank sized for one house may not provide enough drawdown capacity to buffer the added demand. You might see pressure swings that feel like a failing system when the real issue is that the tank is too small for the expanded setup.
We look at the pump, the tank, and the pressure switch together before recommending how to expand the system. Sometimes a tank upgrade solves it. Sometimes a pump upgrade is the right call. Sometimes a storage tank for the outbuilding, filled on a schedule, is the most practical answer.
The pipe run: distance, size, and depth
The longer the run from the wellhead to the outbuilding, the more pressure drop you'll see at the far end. A small pipe over a long distance loses pressure along the way. The pipe needs to be sized for the run length and the flow rate you expect at peak use.
Most water lines in Texas are buried at 12 to 18 inches. That depth protects against typical winter temperatures across the Gulf Coast counties we serve. But exposed connections, above-ground faucets, and pipe running through uninsulated spaces need protection for hard freezes. Animals add demand faster than most people expect
If animals are part of the reason for the new outbuilding, factor their water use into the system planning. Livestock, horses, and poultry all consume water daily, and large stock tanks can draw significant volume when you're filling them. A water trough that refills automatically on a float valve adds a steady background draw to the system. Stock tanks filled by hose periodically create a burst demand. Either way, the system needs to handle it without putting your house pressure at risk.
We've helped ranchers plan systems where the livestock water comes from a dedicated storage tank, filled from the well during off-peak hours, so the animals and the house aren't competing for pressure at the same time. That design isn't always necessary, but it's worth knowing the option exists.
Permits: well work is licensed, pipe runs may not be
Running a water line from your existing well to an outbuilding typically doesn't require a new TDLR permit for the well itself. The well permit was pulled when the well was drilled. But if the expansion requires any changes to the wellhead, pump, or casing, that work must be done by a licensed TDLR contractor. Interior plumbing inside the outbuilding may require a county building permit depending on what you're installing. A hose bib on the outside wall of a barn is a different scope than a wash-down bay with a floor drain.

When a second well makes more sense
If your existing well can't support the expanded demand, or if the outbuilding is far enough away that a long pipe run creates too many pressure problems, a second well may be the better answer. Agricultural wells and irrigation wells are designed differently than domestic wells and are permitted separately through TDLR. If you're running water to a pasture, a stock operation, or an agricultural facility that needs significant volume, that's a different design than adding a wash station to your shop.
